Pretty soon you won’t be able to escape it.

Have no fear, Deco’s monthly concert forecast is here. It calls for variety with only a 20% chance of a jolly jingle.

Get ready to rock and to dance.

Bleachers, The Black Keys, and Jelly Roll are just some of the big names hitting the stage at this year’s Riptide Music Festival.

It’s all going down on Fort Lauderdale Beach, Dec. 2 and 3.

Two-day and single day ticket options are available. Just don’t forget to grab some sunscreen.

What’s better than one Bruno Mars concert? Two bruno mars concerts, of course.

The R&B superstar is playing back-to-back shows at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on Dec. 7 and 8.

Just one catch though, no phones or smart watches allowed.

Let’s party like it’s 1998.

Miss Lauryn Hill is hitting the road to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her hit album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” and you know she’s just gotta come to Miami.

She’s not coming alone though. Her hip-hop trio, the Fugees, will be here too.

Catch them all at the Kasaya Center on Dec. 10.

Flo Rida and Soflo? It’s just a match made in heaven.

Flo is just one of the many artists playing at this year’s Y-100 Jingle Ball. Ludacris and Marshmallo will be there too.

It’s all going down at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Dec. 16.

Deck the halls with Leann Rimes.

The country superstar is bringing her “Joy” holiday tour to the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.

She’ll be performing both classic Christmas tunes and some of her original songs. Leann’s beating Kris Kringle to Miami by a couple of days.

This one’s happening on Dec. 21.

Films to look forward to in December https://wsvn.com/entertainment/films-to-look-forward-to-in-december/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 17:10:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384462 We might not see cold temps here in the 305, but that won’t stop us from bundling up with a warm blanket for a good movie night.

Speaking of movie nights, this December is bringing some good flicks to the big screens.

From true stories to a musical remake of a 19-80’s classic, here’s what to expect from cinemas this December.

“The Boys in the Boat”

Based on real events, “The Boys in the Boat” tells the story of the University of Washington men’s crew team, and their quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

The guys have to learn to work together to beat out other teams from their school just to get to Berlin, but then, they have to beat Hitler’s athletes in their own country.

George Clooney directs the film, and english actor Callum Turner stars as rower, Joe Rantz.

George Clooney: “Rowing, in particular in the 1920s, was one of the most attended sports for the United States. ‘The Boys in the Boat” was about strong, tough kids, but they were poor and hungry. They’re rowing because it’s the only way they can stay in college.”

“Ferrari”

Ferraris’ might be a status symbol for the elite now, but back in 1957, the Italian car company was almost bankrupt.

“Ferrari” stars Adam driver as Enzo Ferrari,” the owner and name stake of the brand, and his goal of winning the Mille Miglia To pull the company out of bankruptcy, and years before Ferrari’s historic race against the Ford Motor Company.

“The Color Purple”

“The Color Purple” stars Halle Bailey, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, Ciara, and R&B singer H.E.R.

It’s a musical, based on the hit stage version.

The movie shows the lives of African American women in the south during the 1900s.

Bonus: Oprah Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 19-85 movie, is back, behind the scenes, as a musical producer.

Deco’s Lynn Martinez tries out peppermint shot glasses inspired by TikTok https://wsvn.com/entertainment/decos-lynn-martinez-tries-out-peppermint-shot-glasses-inspired-by-tiktok/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:22:01 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384294 Lynn, I understand this year, you’re giving thanks to TikTok.

That’s right. I actually found a use for the app that didn’t involve me sitting there in a trance swiping and swiping with drool.

But, you know how they make everything look easy with those quick edits? Yeah, everything’s not easy.

Lynn Martinez: “OK, for Thanksgiving in our home, we like to get Christmas started.”

So this year we’re gonna make something I’ve never made before.

Lynn Martinez: “We’re gonna make peppermint shot glasses. I saw this on a TikTok and it looks so easy.”

You need a silicone mold and a bag of peppermint candy.

Lynn Martinez: “The recipe said that you could put this in the oven but it’s rubber, how’s that gonna work? I hope there’s no fire, do we even have a fire extinguisher? OK, so 350.”

While the oven is warming, shove the candy in the mold. I mean, guess.

Lynn Martinez: “Again, TikTok says it works.

I just guessed and put like five mints in each

Lynn Martinez: “So our concoction is ready for the oven. Let’s see if the silicone catches fire. It’s been 24 minutes and I can smell smoke, so I think we should take them out. That looks horrible.”

Disaster.

Lynn Martinez: “It’s a debacle. I don’t think we can save this. Well, OK, here’s the good news, it’s good to try new things, right? And as a baker, you improve through every mistake.”

Whatever, time to save this. Stuff more candy in.

Lynn Martinez: “Round two. Trying to resurrect.”

Time now for some anger release.

Lynn Martinez: “‘They turn out so festive and cute,’ not really, lady.”

Alright, take round two out of the oven.

Lynn Martinez: “Now, TikTok didn’t say put in the freezer but that’s what we’re gonna do.”

20 minutes later…

Lynn Martinez: “Oh, it does work.”

Twist and pop those suckers out.

Lynn Martinez: “They’re not stunning, but I think they’ll hold some liquid.”

Perfect to toast the holidays with some fresh kale juice.

Lynn Martinez: “Those look so goodish. Cheers. Happy Thanksgiving.”

Enjoy 350 tons of real snow in South Florida at Snow Carnival at Aventura Mall https://wsvn.com/entertainment/enjoy-350-tons-of-real-snow-in-south-florida-at-snow-carnival-at-aventura-mall/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:17:44 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384295 It’s a Thanksgiving miracle. They say that Alex Miranda is a really warm guy, but apparently he has a cold heart tonight.

Alex is at the Snow Carnival at the Aventura Mall.

It’s a winter wonderland.

It’s a real snow day in South Florida.

Immerse yourself in the ultimate winter experience at Snow Carnival.

Alex Miranda: “How chilly is it inside? And this is by design because you guys have thought of everything and you’re really making it feel real.”

Aly Ramos: “It’s going to be in the 50s. So South Florida, get ready to be cold at the Snow Carnival.”

At Aventura Mall, bringing, listen to this, 350 tons of real snow.

Aly Ramos: “Under 30,000 square foot tents.”

Alex Miranda: “When you say snow, I hear it’ll be like pieces of paper, is this real snow?”

Aly Ramos: “This is real snow. How chill, the kids are going to get wet, they’re going to have snow on them just like in any other snow situation. That snow turns into water. So definitely waterproof shoes, full pants, try not to wear shorts.”

And so much more.

Aly Ramos: “We have all sorts of attractions for any of the kids from toddlers all the way up to teenagers. I have actual adults just coming on their own.”

Plus, sparkling lights.

Aly Ramos: “Lots of sweets, lots of savory treats. We also have a full spirit’s bar, but definitely try that hot chocolate, and if you want it a little spiked because you’re just tired of running around with the kids, we can do that too.”

Photo-ops on Santa’s sleigh, a dazzling tree and a life-sized snow globe.

Never thrown a snowball?

Alex Miranda: “Right now, we’re in the Snowball Toss. Talk about a scene that so many kids here in South Florida have never got to experience.”

No problem.

Here are two things that we don’t have; hills and snow.

Aly Ramos: “You purchase your ticket just like you would for a movie, you have a specific time and it takes about an hour, hour-and-a-half.”

Snow Carnival opens on Thanksgiving Day at 12 p.m.

Tickets for kids start at $35 and adults $40.

Paul Giamatti stars as a grumpy professor in ‘The Holdovers’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/paul-giamatti-stars-as-a-grumpy-professor-in-the-holdovers/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 00:51:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384292 Who doesn’t love a good break away from school? You go home an visit friends, enjoy family and get some r-and-r.

In “The Holdovers,” a break from school isn’t exactly that. Instead, the film’s about a few unlucky students left behind at boarding school with a grumpy professor. Oh the joy.

“The Holdovers” is about a group of kids stuck at boarding school during a holiday break. That stinks.

Dominic Sessa’s character, who plays Angus, is one of the unlucky ones.

Making matters worse, he’s left behind with his grumpy professor and the school’s head cook.

Golden Globe winner, Paul Giamatti, plays the crabby teacher and get this, the role was made especially for him by Alexander Payne, who also directed Paul in “Sideways.” Remember, he got an Oscar nod for that movie.

Paul Giamatti: “It was strangely flattering because it’s a really great part. You know, I wondered, like, ‘Do I like smell like fish? Do I have super sweaty palms?’ I think I know what he knew I was gonna be able to draw on, which was very, I mean, what a gift.”

Paul and his costar, Da’vine Joy Randolph, who plays the school chef, shared a few takeaways from their roles.

Paul Giamatti: “Deepening a realization of how much these people actually cared about the teaching, you know, to play the other side of it, particularly a guy like this, who’s built up this persona of, kind of, sarcasm and all this stuff and being super strict.”

Da’vine Joy Randolph: “You can sometimes get into, slide into this defect of like, this is your nine to five. It’s far too precious of a job to me for that to happen. I think why they say he’s an actor’s director is that he creates the circumstances for you to win and for you to succeed, and I’m so grateful for that because it reinstated in me that spark again.”

The flick also happens to be Dominic’s debut role.

Dominic Sessa: “I kind of just had to throw myself into it.”

The teen was auditioning for college programs, before landing the role.

Dominic Sessa: “I was in the midst of auditioning for drama programs in college, so, definitely help my applications getting into this gig.”

Luminosa at Jungle Island returns after 4 years to light up your world with art https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/luminosa-at-jungle-island-returns-after-4-years-to-light-up-your-world-with-art/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 02:29:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383982 Missed seeing Luminosa at Jungle Island?

Well… They’re back.

The last time Luminosa was in Miami was back in 2019.

Lauren Inderbitzin: “Luminosa is a completely immersive cultural experience where you can come enjoy the work of over 150 different artists who have created different lands using silk and steel. And they’ve built all these things by hand.”

All of Jungle Island is covered in lights. That’s over a mile long.

Lauren Inderbitzin: “There are four different lands guests can come and experience at Luminosa”

Take a walk on the wild side with their Animalia Area

Lauren Inderbitzin: “That’s going to take you into the jungle with animals that are larger than life.”

Then it’s time to hit the ocean…

Lauren Inderbitzin: “Get up close to Neptune’s Castle to really see the full immersion feeling.”

You’ll have a “whale” of a good time getting up close to the marine life. Don’t worry, these jellyfish don’t sting.

Lauren Inderbitzin: “After that, they can go to the Chin dynasty with giant dragons and different lantern sets.”

Hey, can we train this dragon?

Uh, I’ll take that as a no.

There’s even a Chinese acrobat performance.

Lauren Inderbitzin: “There is also a Latin American cultural section where you can be fully immersed in this beautiful culture, even walking down a line of Day of the Dead decorations as well.”

Aracelis Rodriguez: “My favorite part was returning to Luminosa and seeing the new animals and the different lights all around.”

Lauren Inderbitzin: “The feeling I hope people get from visiting Luminosa is really being transported into these lands, and getting to have that experience where you don’t feel like you’re in Miami anymore. You’re in the jungle, you’re in the water, or you’re getting to visit these temples.”

Luminosa is open Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Friday to Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 pm.

Prima Pasta makes pumpkin martini as Deco’s Shireen Sandoval’s annual Thanksgiving cocktail https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/prima-pasta-makes-pumpkin-martini-as-decos-shireen-sandovals-annual-thanksgiving-cocktail/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 01:22:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383974 One of the things Lynn loves most about Thanksgiving is my yearly creative cocktail.

Usually, I come up with a new recipe every year… But I just got married, moved and somehow forgot to get my drink on.

Never fear, the Prima pumpkin martini is here.

Shireen Sandoval: “Happy Thanksgiving Deco Drive peeps, I am so excited to be celebrating with you this year, I have everything I need, I’m totally ready for my Thanksgiving feast.”

Hot pink dinner jacket, check.

Matching “Loubie’s,” check.

Pouty pink lips, double check.

Yep, I’m serving Thanksgiving Day glam.

Shireen Sandoval: “All this beauty stuff and getting ready makes me parched. Speaking of drinks, I forgot about my annual Thanksgiving day cocktail.”

OMG, I know exactly who to call.

Shireen Sandoval: “I forgot all about my annual Thanksgiving day cocktail, I was thinking you could make me the Prima pumpkin martini so I can serve it to my guests.”

Prima Pasta to the rescue.

My favorite bartender, Henry, is ready and waiting.

Let the Prima pumpkin martini-making begin.

After the ice, he adds three spoonfuls of pumpkin puree, yummy.

Two shots of vanilla vodka, then…

Henry: “Cream of cinnamon and vanilla one part.”

Henry adds nutmeg for spice…

Henry: “and also a little bit of cinnamon.”

He rims the glass with lemon and tops it off with cookie crumbles mixed with sugar to make it sweeter.

Come to mama.

Drum roll, please….

And here comes the yummy goodness. Isn’t she lovely?

Henry garnishes with a cinnamon stick and more yummy spices.

Henry: “It’s the Prima pumpkin martini. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.”

It’s a Thanksgiving day miracle or would that be a martini?

Shireen Sandoval: “Cheers to the holidays.”

Nicolas Cage is on everyone’s mind in new film ‘Dream Scenario’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/nicolas-cage-is-on-everyones-mind-in-new-film-dream-scenario/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 00:47:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383949 Nicolas Cage’s latest film finds him playing the man of many people’s dreams. He stars in the new comedy “Dream Scenario.”

We spoke to the actor about playing a unique character for him and how “Nicolas Cage memes” helped him relate to it.

If you dream it, he will come.

Nic Cage keeps showing up in everyone’s dreams in “Dream Scenario.”

Nicolas Cage: “So when I read this script, ‘Dream Scenario,’ I thought, ‘Well, I think I understand what Paul feels like, I’ll just apply those feelings towards this character.'”

Nic has no idea why it’s happening, but that’s not stopping him from going viral.

Oh he knows all about that. Thanks to his real life experience with the “Nicolas Cage memes,” which were popular about 14 years ago.

Nicolas Cage: “I went through my own experience with the internet and meme-ification and as a result of that video, ‘Nicolas Cage loses his crap’ or whatever, it started growing exponentially and compounding on itself. So there were feelings of confusion, frustration, stimulation, I was all of the above.

Popularity aside, Nic enjoyed shooting the film and hopes the audience sees it in his body of work.

Nic Cage: “I want to get to the truth of the character. Hopefully, some sort of catharsis with my own life experience so that when you go to the picture, you’re seeing something genuine.”

Don’t feel like cooking this year? Celebrate Thanksgiving Miami style at these restaurants https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/dont-feel-like-cooking-this-year-celebrate-thanksgiving-miami-style-at-these-restaurants/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 03:10:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383602 Thanksgiving checklist sound off:

Turkey… check.

Mashed potatoes… check.

Stuffing… check.

Am I missing something?

Don’t forget about your stretchy pants.

Aside from a good home-cooked meal, two Miami restaurants are taking the stress out of the holiday prep with their unique takes on Thanksgiving staples.

Don’t be a “Thank-Zilla” this Thanksgiving, and let someone else do all the cooking this holiday.

Red Rooster in Overtown is adding some more Miami to their holiday menu.

Anastassia Saint-Eloi: “We wanted to add a unique take on the staple Thanksgiving items to bring awareness of the beautiful cultures that are in Miami like the Latin cultures, the African cultures.”

And to do that, they’re spicing things up… Literally.

Anastassia Saint-Eloi: “We have jerk, we have curry, we have our spice rum butter, that we’re taking influences from the multitude of cultures here in Miami.”

Ready to gobble-gobble these curry turkey wings, along with some other faves?

Anastassia Saint-Eloi: “Our fantastic mac and cheese, our warm chocolate bourbon pecan pie, and our fabulous amorous collard greens. We also have our jerk-fingerling sweet potatoes.

Not to mention their cornbread.

Elijah Harlow: “My favorite part of the meal has to be that cornbread stuffing, and hands down those sweet potatoes, I would absolutely die for.”

Anastassia Saint-Eloi: “In addition to enjoying our great food, guests will have the opportunity to drink refreshing cocktails, view, amazing artwork from all over the world, and the best part about it all is there’s no cleanup.”

Over at Queen Restaurant and Lounge on Miami Beach, Thanksgiving is an extravagant affair.

Mitchell Hesse: “Queen being a Japanese steak house, we wanted to incorporate the Japanese and American traditions together, so we thought it was a great opportunity to invite the local community to experience something special.”

To do that they’re adding some classic holiday flavors to their menu, like pumpkin.

Mitchell Hesse: “When you come for Thanksgiving we have a wide arrange of special signatures for the day, we have the pumpkin tofu, the three pumpkin risotto,”

As for the bird… They have a chicken and foie gras meatball.

Daniela Slocker: “This Thanksgiving meal was delicious, it surprised me. My favorite was the pumpkin tofu.

Mitchell Hesse: “People should come to Queen because it’s going to be a different experience than the regular Thanksgiving traditions going around in Miami that day. We’re going to be using our cuisine and our venue to it’s full potential to offer something truly unique to Miami.”

Deco’s Alex Miranda gets cheesy with Thanksgiving meal recipe https://wsvn.com/entertainment/decos-alex-miranda-gets-cheesy-with-thanksgiving-meal-recipe/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 00:56:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383586 There is a holiday between Christmas and Halloween in case you forgot. It’s called Thanksgiving.

My appetite never forgets and neither do all the talented family cooks out there in SoFlo. Deco’s Alex Miranda is not one of them.

Alex?

Let’s be honest, the one thing we all care about is mashed potatoes. So this year, I whipped up something cheesy for you. And for once, I actually mean, you know, Parmesan.

Happy turkey day.

Alex Miranda: Is there cheese on my face? Haha.”

On the menu at the Miranda family house this year. Yeah, family house, not my house, because my kitchen is way too small.

Some baked mashed potatoes with Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs recipe. I don’t know. I got it from the Food Network website. Thank you, Giada De Laurentiis.

Alex Miranda: “Prep time 20 minutes, and cook time 35 minutes. Pop quiz: How long is that all together? Alright. Step one: Easy enough. Set the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and don’t burn the house down.”

Step two: Peel four pounds of russet potatoes.

Alex Miranda: “Which peeler do we think is better? Probably the bigger one, right?”

I mean, unless you’ve got the motion right.

Alex Miranda: “You know, when you just kinda.”

One full eternity later…

Alex Miranda: “Did you ever notice that a pot can be a mirror if you look closely enough?”

Dump the potatoes in boiling water.

Then wait for about 20 minutes.

Alex Miranda: “What is the meaning of life anyway? I mean, what are we really doing here? And were Jada and Will really broken up, or did she cheat on him? Why does Britney like knives so much? Oh, my God, the potatoes.”

I wouldn’t call this tender yet.

Alex Miranda: “This feels like bricks.”

Maybe Britney was onto something.

Better.

Alex Miranda: “Needs butter.”

Mix in melted butter, milk, cheese, and salt. Now, grinding this pepper in reminds me of…

Alex Miranda: “This extraordinary Italian restaurant. It’s called Olive Garden.”

I could only dream. Transfer the potatoes to a butter-coated baking pan. Then throw on the breadcrumbs and even more cheese.

Alex Miranda: “Alright, y’all, here we go. This is where the magic happens.”

For 20 minutes, no less.

Alex Miranda: “Ta-ta-ta-da.”

Turns out it needed five more minutes of magic.

Alex Miranda: “Does the breading look finished?”

But the aroma? 10 out of 10.

Alex Miranda: “I wish you could smell it. Try.”

Just please don’t taste it.

Alex Miranda: “I’m satisfied. Tastes great. Tastes alright. And we should all be so thankful for the food that we have in front of us. I’m so thankful for my family, for my friends, for Lynn and Shireen, for my health, and for all of you who watch Deco drive every day, sometimes. Whatever. We love you for it. Happy Thanksgiving or happy s… No.”

Sanksgiving. It was my spanglish joke. Before the timer ruined it.

‘Fargo’ stars Joe Keery and Richa Moorjani discuss work on Season 5 of FX’s popular crime series https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/fargo-stars-joe-keery-and-richa-moorjani-discuss-work-on-season-5-of-fxs-popular-crime-series/ Sun, 19 Nov 2023 22:46:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383034 Every season of FX’s “Fargo” brings a whole new story, cast and chaos to the show. Its fifth season is no different. We sat down with the two new stars of the show to find out what it was like working on the popular series on and off the screen

Jon Hamm (as Sheriff Roy Tillman): “There is no one else on God’s green earth who is a better enforcer of the laws of this land than Roy Tillman.”

FX’s “Fargo” is back for Season 5, along with two new faces to the cast: “Stranger Things” actor Joe Keery and “Never Have I Ever” actress Richa Moorjani, who were excited to be on the hit show.

Richa Moorjani (as Deputy Indira Olmstead): “I see a woman who outsmarted two kidnappers.”

Joe Keery: “It’s a show that I was a fan of. Noah is a brilliant guy and an amazing director, obviously, but just like a fantastic writer. “

Jon Hamm also joins this season’s cast. The “Mad Men” star happens to play Joe’s on-screen dad.

Joe Keery: “Jon Hamm is the sheriff, and I play kind of his sheriff’s deputy — so, entitled, privileged…”

Richa Moorjani: “And son.”

Joe Keery: “And his son, and I’m trying to kind os make my father proud. “

Joe and Richa star as cops — Gator and Indira, respectively — who have different ways of getting work done.

Joe Keery: “It was really fun, and just the dynamic between the two characters. They’re so different, and the way that they interact, it was…”

Ricna Moorjani: “They’re both cops, but they’re on total opposite ends of the spectrum.”

Joe Keery (as Gator Tillman): “I’m a winner.”

Richa Moorjani (as Deputy Indira Olmstead): “That don’t sound accurate.”

Joe Keery (as Gator Tillman): “I’m a winner!”

A big change for Richa wasn’t just the storyline and tone of the show.

Richa Moorjani: “For me, personally, the accent, obviously — I went from an Indian accent to a Minnesota accent — and going from a PhD science student to a cop in Minnesota.”

Richa Moorjani (as Deputy Indira Olmstead): “We think these fellas grabbed her up in Minnesota.”

Every season sees the show change characters, but if the two had the chance to come back…

Joe Keery: “It would be fun to return and see where the characters were at, and it would be really crazy, I think.”

Richa Moorjani: “It was hard to say goodbye to the show when we wrapped and goodbye to this character, and yeah, it would be a dream to do more.”

Juno Temple (as Dorothy “Dot” Lyon): “Better sleep with both eyes open.”

Jon Hamm (as Sheriff Roy Tillman): “Cut it out.”

Lamorne Morris (as Deputy Witt Farr): It’s good to see you again, Mrs. Lyon.”

Juno Temple (as Dorothy “Dot” Lyon): “That wasn’t me.”

Season 5 premieres Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-367/ Sun, 19 Nov 2023 01:57:34 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382998 For SoFlo locals like us who don’t get to see leaves changing or snow, we have to settle for watching it on the big screen … which is not that bad, especially with this week’s films.

In fact, you get a nice mix of movies hitting the box office this weekend, like a guy named Snow and a murderer who gets a kick out of cooking turkey. So, if you’re ready, here you go — and insert Showtime.

From the song “The Hanging Tree”: “Where I told you to run. So we’d both be free.”

To have freedom is the struggle in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.”

The film is set 64 years before the franchise’s trilogy, and it answers the question, “Why is President Snow such a meanie?”

Tom Blyth: “Audiences will be very grateful to get a glimpse into the kind of origin of what made the Hunger Games what they are.”

Oscar Kightley (as Tavita): “All we want is one goal, one goal.”

[Player misses goal.]

Michael Fassbender (as Thomas Rongen): “C’mon, guys!”

The Pacific island setting of “Next Goal Wins” is dreamy, and the story is dreamy, too — full of dreams to score one soccer goal.

Based on the true story of one of sports’ greatest losing streaks and how the team turned it all around. Intimidation was one strategy.

Taika Waititi: “Call it a war dance, which is kind of accurate. But it’s used in very many different situations.”

It’s time for a slasher movie! “Thanksgiving” is the perfect marinade for one killer.

This body-chopping maniac terrorizes the people of Plymouth, Massachusetts, where Turkey Day began. If you like blood served with your stuffing, director Eli Roth says this might be your jam.

Eli Roth: “My best friend Jeff and I would just sit around and think of ideas for this movie, because there was no Thanksgiving slasher film. Every holiday was taken.”

Paul Rhys (as Duncan): “Lots of people get lost in Saltburn.”

[Glass breaks.]

Rosamund Pike (as Elspeth Catton): “Oh, that’s just giving me goose bumps.”

Being invited to a rich family’s mansion seems like a good deal for a college student. “Saltburn,” a psychological thriller will make you think not … because suddenly, the aristocratic vibe turns dark and trippy.

Daveed Diggs (as Spruce, voice): “My exquisitely chiseled rock hard abs and I quit.”

Troye Sivan (as Floyd, voice): “Branch, we’re out of sync. We’ve gone from boys to men, and now there’s only one direction for us to go: the back streets.”

Aww! Poor Baby Branch left all alone by his bandmates. No worries — “Trolls Band Together” is reuniting him with his lost bros years later. Let’s see if they’re the troll zaddies we want them to be.

Eric André (as John Dory, voice): “We still got it.”

Anna Kendrick (as Queen Poppy, voice): “Looks like your band days aren’t behind you. Rrrr.”

Christmas Wonderland at Tropical Park aims to spread holiday magic to kids of all ages — and our inner child https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/christmas-wonderland-at-tropical-park-aims-to-spread-holiday-magic-to-kids-of-all-ages-and-our-inner-child/ Sat, 18 Nov 2023 05:32:44 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382803 We’re getting in the holiday spirit right here in SoFlo. A new attraction in Miami is offering plenty of thrills and chills. Alex Miranda is at Christmas Wonderland at Tropical Park with the deets.

Tonight my name is Jingles at this fabulous Christmas experience that invites South Floridians to come have fun, ride the rides and sen your request to Santa.

“Mrs. Claus”: “It’s so loving and so magical. I’m so excited.”

Wait, that’s not Santa’s Enchanted Forest.

Alex Miranda: “People are wondering, right? ‘Cause they want to come, they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, it’s back!’ But no, it’s Christmas Wonderland, and so, what are they going to see?

Tony Albelo: “It’s not about a comparison, not about a competition. It is a family experience, so we wanted to make sure that we had something for them, as well as something for the older kids and the kid in all of us.”

Looks like Ole St. Nick dropped off a new bag of gifts at Tropical Park this year. Now Christmas Wonderland is lighting up the beloved half-mile Tinsel Trail.

Tony Albelo: “Each one of our lands — there’s six of them — tells a different story. My favorite is HoliDade, as is HoliDade County, and it’s a nod to all the different neighborhoods in Miami.”

At Sweet Street…

Tony Albelo: “Think of ‘Candy Land’ come to life.”

Adults will feel the holiday spirit at the Arctic Delight bar.

Alex Miranda: “Oye, Merry Christmas for the adults, too. I mean, why not?”

Tony Albelo: “I can’t think of a better thing to do while here at Christmas Wonderland…”

Alex Miranda: “Than drink.”

Tony Albelo: “Yeah, maybe have a coquito.”

Catch the reindeer at Santa’s Village, and take a selfie with the big guy himself.

At Toys Town, the toys are larger than life … and, you were waiting for it, 40 rides!

Alex Miranda: “Yeah, that’s 155 feet, to the ground. Yup.”

Including…

Tony Albelo: “We have the biggest traveling Ferris wheel in North America.”

Alex Miranda: “Yeah, we’ve got the carnival down there. You can, you know, take a look at all the different rides you want to ride.”

But if that’s too big, there’s the medium, or small Ferris wheels … and tiny!

Call me Jingles, because Santa’s helpers can really get you into the Christmas spirit.

“Frostbite”: “A high voice like this! And you have to be jolly all the time!”

Alex Miranda: “So, is that the move?”

“Frostbite”: “Yes!”

Alex Miranda: “What’s my origin story?”

“Frostbite”: “Your origin story…”

But it was “Mrs. Claus” who really showed me the ropes.

Alex Miranda: “So, ‘Mrs. Claus,’ do you like techno music?”

Alex Miranda: “It’s filled with so much fun for the kids, but also, you’ve got some thrills here, too.”

Tony Albelo: “We have Techno Power, and of you’ve never been on Techno Power, I think you’re in for a big thrill.”

Alex Miranda: “That makes me want to go on Techno Power.”

Alex Miranda: “‘Mrs. Claus,’ was that as fast as you normally go on Christmastime?”

“Mrs. Claus”: “You guys set me up for this one.”

Alex Miranda: “Your glasses stayed on, and so did my hat.”

“Mrs. Claus”: “I told you I was a pro.”

Tony Albelo: “And that’s what we wanted to give Miami; some of it is traditional, and some of it is not traditional.”

Christmas Wonderland is open through Jan. 7, from 5 p.m. to midnight. Tickets start at $25 for children and $35 for adults online.

Immersive ‘Avian Oasis’ exhibit evokes memories of Pinecrest Gardens’ past https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/immersive-avian-oasis-exhibit-evokes-memories-of-pinecrest-gardens-past/ Sat, 18 Nov 2023 02:39:57 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382792 In Western cultures, birds have been used as symbols of freedom, peace and the Thanksgiving feast, but at Pinecrest Gardens, birds are used as towering sculptures. Get ready for your imagination to take flight this weekend, as Pinecrest Gardens unveils its new art exhibit.

At Pinecrest Gardens…

The Trashmen (singing): “Bird, bird, bird. Bird is the word.”

But no. These birds aren’t your average frequent flyers. In fact, they don’t fly at all.

The garden is inviting guests to see a new immersive art exhibit called “Avian Oasis.”

Cristina Blanco: “We have ‘Avian Oasis’ opening on Saturday, November 18th, to the public, where we welcome six larger-than-life outdoor bamboo sculptures.”

That’s right. Six, 20-foot-tall bird sculptures — intended to evoke memories of the Gardens’ past.

Cristina Blanco: “The Pinecrest Gardens property opened in 1936 as the Parrot Jungle. The vision of the Scherr family was to introduce the world to these amazing, beautiful, feathered birds.”

Although the garden is no longer home to many of those feathered creatures, the original vision of the 20-acre park is going to live on with this new installation — thanks to the sculpture creators The Myth Makers.

Donna Dodson, The Myth Makers: “It’s just a huge honor to be in a major city like Miami, in such a beautiful garden that’s so historic.”

Andy Moerlein, The Myth Makers: “We try really hard to make a connection to the people in the place where we are, with our sculptures. We just want them to have a physical experience in this marvelous garden, this historic place.”

And the experience begins as soon as you drive up.

Cristina Blanco: “This exhibit starts before you arrive into the garden, so on Southwest 112th and at our main entrance, the first two avatars are located.”

Once inside, your journey to find the other four begins. Each bird also has its own myth attached to it that pays homage to this history of South Florida.

But birds are not all the botanical gardens has to offer.

Cristina Blanco: “In a couple of weeks, we will host our Night of Lights festival.”

Starting Dec. 9, the garden will transform into a whimsical wonderland, with thousands of twinkling lights and live performances.

Cristina Blanco: “We have a large portion dedicated to lighting of the trees, and then we have a large open meadow area that has different vendors. We’ll have live music in the meadow, so we have a lot going on during the festival.”

Tala Beach at 1 Hotel South Beach makes guests feel like they’ve traveled to Greece without leaving SoFlo https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/tala-beach-at-1-hotel-south-beach-makes-guests-feel-like-theyve-traveled-to-greece-without-leaving-soflo/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 05:40:42 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382362 Picture this: a lush tropical vacation, not a care in the world, tons of fun, food and parties.

Sounds like a complete dream, but don’t worry — it’s all real! Not to mention, it’s right in our own backyard, so no need to dust off your passport.

This is no Mediterranean vacation. It’s Tala Beach at Miami Beach’s 1 Hotel.

Mio Danilovic: “Tala Beach is a beautiful beach club that we opened here at the 1 Hotel. It’s a Mediterranean-inspired oasis, if you will.”

Think of it like taking a trip to Greece without ever leaving the city.

Mio Danilovic: “People can come from the beach to come have lunch here, they can have lunch and go to the beach, go to the boardwalk. They can come from the hotel, have a beautiful lunch experience or an evening party.”

But if you really want to amp up the fun…

Mio Danilovic: “Tala Nights is this monthly party that we do, it happens once a month. It’s got bottle service, big-name marquee DJs, just a great party and an unforgettable event. It’s a true nighttime beach party.”

Get the night flowing with some cocktails.

Mio Danilovic: “We have the Santorini Sunrise, the Del Sol, the Delia, or the Paraiso Mai Tai.”

And you’re going to want a bite out of this meal.

Mio Danilovic: “The Mezzeh Platter is one of my favorites. After that, the Seafood Tower, which is the shrimp, the lobster, the oysters. The lamb kabob is incredible, and one of my favorites is the hamachi as well.”

Hey, don’t forget to share!

Addy Cordero: “This is such a great experience, it’s a little escape. I honestly don’t feel like you’re in Miami. It’s a great space to hang out with your friends, with your coworkers, and especially over the weekend.”

Mio Danilovic: “In order to experience this, they would have to go to Greece, so instead of flying to Greece to experience this, they can just come here and do it right here in their backyard.”

Tala Beach is open every Thursday through Sunday, from noon to 8 p.m.

Stars of ‘Trolls: Band Together’ hit purple carpet at Los Angeles premiere of animated sequel https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/stars-of-trolls-band-together-hit-purple-carpet-at-los-angeles-premiere-of-animated-sequel/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 03:17:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382334 The stars were out in L.A. last night, and I’m not just talking about the ones in the sky! The cast of “Trolls: Band Together” banded together for a night out on the town … and a first look at their new movie.

Anna Kendrick (as Queen Poppy, voice): “Come on, guys, it’s time!”

Time to hit the red carpet, that is! Or, in this case, the purple one.

No trolling here. The cast of “Trolls: Band Together” cleaned up real nice for a special screening of the film in L.A.

Anna Kendrick (as Queen Poppy, voice): “I can’t believe this is really happening!”

And with a title like that, it’s only fitting to have a little NSYNC reunion. After all, the guys have a new song in the movie.

NSYNC: “If you let me show the way, I’m so excited to see you excited.”

Joey Fatone: “It was cool. You know, we were asked to be a part of it again. The song fits together with the whole storyline and everything else. It was like, why not? It was meant to be.”

Chris Kirkpatrick: “This is just something that the five of us get to do and hang out again, and when we’re back together, it’s just like old times.”

The guys from NSYNC weren’t the only boy band-ers in the house.

AJ McLean: “We have generations that still love boy bands, and the fact that that’s kind of the epicenter of this film is just genius.”

Joey Fatone: “It’s a fun throwback to a lot of different songs. Obviously, you got Backstreet Boys stuff, you got NSYNC. Every kind of boy band you could think of is in there. Exactly, even New Kids.”

Now that we’ve covered the music, we’ve gotta talk about the voices.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Zooey Deschanel are back for their third stint in the “Trolls” franchise.

Zooey Deschanel: “It’s fun. It’s colorful. It’s the characters we all love.”

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: “I just want people to go see it, and I feel like now you’re gonna have the kids go see it, and you’re gonna have all the moms who are big NSYNC fans, they’re going to go see it now. And hopefully, we can make a fourth one.”

Eric André is a newcomer to the “Trolls” universe, and he’s feeling pretty animated about the whole thing.

Eric André: “I love doing cartoons. I love the ‘Trolls’ franchise. It’s like there’s a ton of stuff for kids, obviously, but there’s, like, secret jokes for adults in it, which is the best cartoons.”

Eric André (as John Dory, voice): “We still got it.”

Anna Kendrick (as Queen Poppy, voice): “Looks like your band days aren’t behind you. Rrrr.”

“Trolls: Band Together” is now playing in theaters.

‘Thanksgiving’ director Eli Roth wants horror fans to feast on holiday-themed carnage and come back for seconds https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/thanksgiving-director-eli-roth-wants-horror-fans-to-feast-on-holiday-themed-carnage-and-come-back-for-seconds/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 02:14:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382328 Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends to eat, and even though you might want to kill some of them sometimes, we refrain, of course. We certainly don’t eat them, either, but we can’t say the same about a lunatic in the new Thanksgiving horror movie. Deco’s Alex Miranda has all the juicy and well-done details.

It’s true! In a world where movies seem to just rehash the same ideas over and over, a Thanksgiving-inspired killer Pilgrim is something new. As Gen Z would say, this psycho ate and left no crumbs.

Thanksgiving dinner. Mmm, yummy … but that doesn’t look like a turkey.

What’s cooking is the new scary Thanksgiving movie, “Thanksgiving.”

Eli Roth: “There was no Thanksgiving slasher film. Every holiday was taken.”

Alex Miranda: “And it lends itself so well.”

Eli Roth: “Yeah, it does.”

And director Eli Roth will promise you this.

Eli Roth: “This will be the most insane, bat[expletive] crazy, fun horror movie you have seen in the movies, probably since ‘Scream 1.’ It’s going to be the most fun you’ll ever have in the theater.”

Even better, this unhinged camp horror is actually based on his mock 2007 “Grindhouse” trailer.

Alex Miranda: “Fans have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.”

Eli Roth: “It was seeing the Black Friday trampling videos, there were these viral videos of people killing each other for waffle irons and TVs. We thought, ‘That’s it!'”

An axe-wielding Pilgrim maniac terrorizes the residents of Plymouth — yep, birthplace of the holiday.

Eli Roth: “I was 12 years old growing up in Massachusetts, so Thanksgiving is literally stuffed down your throat. So we were thinking like, ‘Oh, man. what if we threw someone in a butter churner, slowly killed them, and then roasted a human turkey?'”

Picking off victims one by one, these seemingly random revenge killings soon start adding up — to more than calories.

Eli Roth: “It’s about the commercialization of Christmas that just bleeds over, and that’s what happens now. I mean, literally November 1st, the day after Halloween, my phone starts blowing up, ‘Black Friday sale, Black Friday sale.’ There is no Thanksgiving anymore.”

But it’s OK, because McDreamy Patrick Dempsey stars. Aka reigning People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive?

Alex Miranda: “Do you dream about Parick Dempsey at night, the way that…

Eli Roth: “Many people do?” [laughs]

Alex Miranda: “Dream or nightmare, as long as he’s in there.”

Eli Roth: “Let me put it this way: he is McDreamy, but I wanted him to be McNightmarey.”

But does Eli buy all the fuss? Like, could his looks really kill?

Eli Roth: “I think he is sexy, but I do think Rick Hoffman from ‘Suits’ is a close second. And when you’re on set, it’s tough, because you’re almost blinded by his sexiness. As a director, it’s my job to just get past that.”

So what does the director of “Thanksgiving” love to eat most at Thanksgiving?

Eli Roth: “Sweet potatoes, and then I do like to have a human head with an apple in it — but only for display.”

But he says you might still have an appetite after watching. Maybe.

Eli Roth: “If you add too much gore. too much blood, too much scares, too much of any one ingredient, it overpowers it. It’s about finding that nice balance.”

“Thanksgiving” is now slaying at a theater near you.

Pentatonix spreads holiday cheer with new album and Christmas tour https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/pentatonix-spreads-holiday-cheer-with-new-album-and-christmas-tour/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 14:19:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381823 Grammy-winning vocal group Pentatonix just wrapped their world tour, and they’re already prepping for another one. They’re amping up holiday cheer with their new holiday album “The Greatest Christmas Hits” and a new holiday tour.

The Grammy-winning a cappella group Pentatonix is ready to kick off the holiday cheer with “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Tour.”

Mitch Grassi: “Christmas is always the best part of what we do because it’s the most fun, it’s the most festive, it’s the most showy tour that we do, and we have a lot of really fun surprises in store for this Christmas show.”

The group plans to outdo last year’s Christmas arena tour.

Kristin Maldonado: “We’re adding in extra gags and things for the audience. New fun things for us. Doing a lot of new songs. I feel like now that we’ve done so many Christmas songs, too, like, you’re really getting, like, all the hits, all the good ones, because we have so many, so we’re really, like, giving you the best show possible.”

Part of the fun for the quintet is bringing in fresh tunes from their newest album, “The Greatest Christmas Hits.”

Scott Hoying: “We love to make Christmas albums, so we just ended up making eight new songs, and honestly, I feel like these eight new songs are some of our best ever. I feel like we’re in a really inspired place, and those mixed with like ‘Hallelujah,’ ‘Mary Did You Know,’ all those, it just like turned into an album that we’re really, really proud of.”

What they love most is being a part of their fans’ holiday fun.

Kevin Olusola: “We love to watch families come to the shows every year and post pictures in the lobby and just bring so many people together, and it just spreads this message of togetherness and unity that we really try to represent in the most beautiful way, and so, it’s humbling to be able to represent that every Christmas.”

Pentatonix will be in South Florida on Dec. 14 at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood. For more information, click here.

Miami Bee Experts share their efforts to keep bee population alive — and how you can help https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/miami-bee-experts-share-their-efforts-to-keep-bee-population-alive-and-how-you-can-help/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 05:42:56 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381792 Bees, bees, bees — they help make the world go ’round. But with their numbers on the decline, our future doesn’t look so sweet.

That’s where the Miami Bee Experts come in. They can teach you how to become a beekeeper and an ecosystem hero at the same time. Deco’s Alex Miranda is buzzing about the story.

They will give you bees, or they will take your bees away. No matter what, the Miami Bee Experts do it ethically, because they love these little workers almost as much as I love Beyoncé.

In the music world, Beyoncé is queen bee, but the queen of this beehive…

Stephanie Smith: “He can’t possibly sting you.”

Alex Miranda: “Can you guarantee that?”

Stephanie Smith: “I promise.”

…has no idea who she is.

Stephanie Smith: “This is honey.”

Alex Miranda: “Is that the queen, or is she sort of like voluptuous?”

Queen Bubble Bee is her own boss babe and too busy for Bey.

Stephanie Smith: “The queen is laying about 1,200 eggs a day. She’s working just as hard as the worker bees.”

Alex Miranda: “A day?!”

Stephanie Smith: “A day.”

For five years! So don’t call her a diva when she gets a little bit, you know, testy.

Stephanie Smith: “There’s a hum that gets louder.”

Stephanie is co-founder of Miami Bee Experts.

Stephanie Smith: “My body automatically defaulted into this Zen, and that’s really when I fell in love with them.”

She says bees are the bee’s knees…

Stephanie Smith: “They’re actually measuring how much space they have.”

Alex Miranda: “Do they get vacation time?”

…and should bee treated as such.

Stephanie Smith: “So that they can make honey and pollinate plants.”

Alex Miranda: “Wow.”

Because without them, we’ve got a problem.

Stephanie Smith: “They pollinate two-thirds of our food. so they pollinate apples, coffee…”

Coffee? That’s all I needed to hear.

Alex Miranda: “When you look at them up close, they’re fuzzy.”

Stephanie Smith: “They’re adorable!”

And with numbers dwindling, beekeepers are helping to keep our ecosystem alive.

Stephanie Smith: “Anybody really who has an interest in building a relationship with their environment.”

Like Jordan.

Jordan Hernandez: “Michael and Stephanie have helped me set up a hive in my own yard.”

And they’ll show you, too.

Jordan Hernandez: “You can be as hands-on as you want, but sometimes letting them do their thing is best.”

And me, because I need a hobby.

But they won’t just teach you how to save the planet. They’ll also remove any unwanted guests…

Michael Haley: “This probably formed in the morning.”

Alex Miranda: “Today?”

Michael Haley: “Today.”

…buzzing around your backyard.

Alex Miranda: “What would be your guess?”

Michael Haley: “Two, three thousand bees.”

Stephanie Smith: “We do ethical, pesticide-free removals, bring the bees home, rehabilitate them, supplement their health and use them to produce honey.”

Which they sell … but can student surpass masters? I taste-tested each of their latest batches to find out.

Not yet.

Alex Miranda: “Michael, come on down!”

Michael Haley: “Yeah!”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-366/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 01:57:08 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381713 Movies On Demand is just explosive this week, and there’s no telling if it’ll bomb — in a good or bad way. We can’t tell you that, but we can tell you what you’re in store for, and this is a bunch of good news. From holiday cheer to cult-ish man dome, here’s what you got steamin’ hot at ‘ya in this week’s Showtime.

Angus Cloud (as Sterling): “Whoa, whoa, whoa, give me that ticket, old man. A hundred and fifty-six million! Give me that ticket right now!”

You buy a lottery ticket, and it hits for $156 million, but then you get robbed at the same time. Bummer!

This is what happens in the thriller “Your Lucky Day,” starring the late Angus Cloud. To keep the moolah, blood has to spill.

Colman Domingo (as Bayard Rustin): “How many bodies does it take to surround the White House?”

Lilli Kay (as Rachelle): “How many? Sorry, I thought that was a set up for a joke. You literally want me to find out?”

Colman Domingo (as Bayard Rustin): “Yes!”

“Rustin” is a biographical drama about civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.

Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, the story centers around the 1963 March on Washington, D.C., the massive protest where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the powerful “I Have a Dream” speech.

Adrien Brody (as Dad Dan): “Take back your power, Ralph. Welcome, Ralph, son, to Manodrome.”

Adrien Brody is the leader of men in “Manodrome,” and Jesse Eisenberg is an Uber driver who gets introduced to a self-help/cult-like all-male group. After joining, he has a breakdown and goes crazy.

Brandy Norwood (as Jackie Jennings): “Life just seems to fly by when you’re having a splendiferous time.”

Heather Graham (as Charlotte Sanders): “Oh, is that…?”

Jason Biggs (as Rob Sanders): “The Jennings Holiday Newsletter.”

Heather Graham (as Charlotte Sanders): “It’s the most absurd thing ever.”

Everybody has that perfect friend … with the perfect life, perfect house, perfect husband, blah, blah, blah.

In “Best. Christmas. Ever!” singer Brandy plays that “all put together” gal-pal, and Heather Graham is hating bad.

Kevin Connolly (as Gerald): “Oh, Claus-trophobic.”

Ludacris (as Eddie Garrick): “I’m sorry, what?”

Kevin Connolly (as Gerald): “Claus-trophobic, fear of Santa Claus.”

Ludacris (as Eddie Garrick): “That’s ludicrous.”

Ludacris is a Grinch in the holiday family movie “Dashing Through the Snow.”

He hates Christmas, bit Nick, dressed in a red suit, needs his help. Trying to be a good guy for his daughter, he gives him a ride, and he finds joy in the season.

Lil Rel Howery (as Nick): “It’s a sleigh being pulled by eight beautiful reindeer. It’s mispaired to Pinktooth.”

‘Next Goal Wins’ stars walk red carpet at Taika Waititi’s underdog sports movie’s premiere https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/next-goal-wins-stars-walk-red-carpet-at-taika-waititis-underdog-sports-movies-premiere/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 01:10:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381699 A good underdog story has a lot of heart … but don’t take it from us. We caught up with the cast of “Next Goal Wins” at the movie’s premiere to see what they had to say about the film.

Oscar Kightley (as Tavita): “Mark my words: things are going to change. I got us a new coach.”

Soccer coach Thomas Rongen has the toughest challenge of his career: turn the American Samoa soccer team, the weakest team in the league, into winners.

Oscar Kightley (as Tavita): “We haven’t had one goal in the history of our country trying to having a soccer team.”

The movie doesn’t just tell the story of the soccer team. It also showcases the Samoan culture — on-screen and at the premiere.

One aspect they really wanted to highlight was the story of Jaiyah Saelua, the first fa’afafine or transgender player, to compete in the World Cup, played by Kaimana.

Kaimana: “She is a legend in the FIFA world, and I just feel really honored, and it feels really great to have been part of this story.”

Get this: it was Kaimana’s first acting gig ever, and the FIFA star couldn’t be prouder.

Jaiyah Saelua: “It’s hard to find an actress who is Samoan, a fa’afafine, a trans woman, is athletic and can act.”

The film is based on a documentary about the squad, but “Next Goal Wins” has a lot more comedy and drama, courtesy of director Taika Waititi.

Taika Waititi: “I allowed myself to be a lot more open and fluid with the creative process.”

One of those ideas was the direction for Michael Fassbender’s character, head coach Thomas Rongen.

Michael Fassbender: “Once we started developing the character on set, actually, it started to sort of take legs and go actually further away than the real Thomas Rongen, to sort of serve the story we were telling.”

Oscar Kightley (as Tavita): “Dear God, thank you for sending Mr. Rongen. We’ve become quite attached to him. It’s like finding a little lost white kid at the mall and telling him which way to go.”

“Next Goal Wins” starts Friday in theaters.

A woman towers over Lincoln Road. Her name is R-Revolution https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/a-woman-towers-over-lincoln-road-her-name-is-r-revolution/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 01:23:41 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381182 They say good things come in small packages, and while that can be true, tonight it’s all about something that’s a big deal … and we’re not just talking about Deco’s major superstar Alex Miranda.

Whoever said everything’s bigger in Texas hasn’t been to Miami Beach lately, because there’s a new massive work of art on display … and it’s sure to make you look up.

The list goes on and on. And in the case of the new addition to Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, “massive” is just one way to describe R-Revolution.

Marco Cochrane: “R-Revolution is a 45-foot statue made out of steel and stainless steel.”

“World traveler” is another.

Marco Cochrane: “R-Revolution has been to Burning Man, Treasure Island, Petaluma, Las Vegas.”

But artist Marco Cochrane tells Deco…

Marco Cochrane: “This is the first time she’s been on the East Coast, and Miami. I’m really excited to be here.”

The statue weighs 32,000 pounds, and it took crews about a week to get her standing. Well worth it for this showstopper.

R-Revolution isn’t just cool to look at. There’s a message behind her.

Marco Cochrane: “In these crazy times, with all the distractions that we have, the message is, you can just be present, and it’s enough to just be.”

For the folks on Lincoln Road, the symbolism played a big role in why they wanted it showcased here.

Lyle Stern: “This piece allows us to have a conversation about the power of woman and the power of individuality as well. When you put art and public spaces together, I think it’s what community is about.”

And, because it is outside, everyone can stop to take it all in.

Lincoln Road passer-by: “Just so impressive. Like a women-forward and strong and powerful statement. Makes me feel excited and good. Yeah, we need to take care of each other.”

R-Revolution will be on display from now through next April.

Cast of ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ hit the red carpet https://wsvn.com/entertainment/cast-of-the-hunger-games-the-ballad-of-songbirds-and-snakes-hit-the-red-carpet/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 01:08:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381188 Another movie making it’s debut this weekend is the prequel to the Hunger Games franchise and it was a star studded affair.

But before hitting the silver screen, the cast of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” lined the Hollywood Boulevard last night for their close-up, and it was a tribute to see.

Everyone hungers for something at the red carpet premiere of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”

The cast and curious celebs like Mario Lopez and Tiffani Amber Thiessen came out to the historic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to check out the prequel movie.

Up front and center was Tom Blyth who plays young President Snow.

Tom Blyth: “It feels like a long time in the making. I mean obviously we finished filming a year ago this month in Berlin and when you finish any project you almost can’t believe it’s ever going to be out there. But this especially was such a labor of love for everyone involved.”

Very much involved in the flick was Rachel Zegler. She’s Lucy Gray Baird, Snow’s love interest in the flick.

Rachel Zegler: “I think a lot of filmmakers thought that the story was over with Katniss and the gang and getting to delve into these characters in an even deeper meaningful way, it’s such an honor as an actor to get to do that.”

Viola Davis, who’s a meany in the flick, sparkled in green on the carpet.

Viola Davis: “Sometimes it becomes an actor’s dream to just be a part of a franchise in anyway and to be able to play with a villain role. Sometimes I get tired of being the nice person all the time ’cause I’m that person in life too.”

Peter Dinklage’s character is not at the bottom of “The Hunger Games” totem pole.

Peter Dinklage: “He’s got one of my favorite names of any characters I’ve ever played; Casca Highbottom. Basically, he’s the creator of the Hunger Games and he is now living with the guilt of sort of uncorking the terrible genie that he can’t get back into the bottle.”

Director Taika Waititi brings out the laughs and heart with sports comedy ‘Next Goal Wins’ https://wsvn.com/entertainment/director-taika-waititi-brings-out-the-laughs-and-heart-with-sports-comedy-next-goal-wins/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 01:03:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381185 Soccer or should we say, fútbol, is global. And some teams take winning to a spiritual level.

It’s serious for some countries. Unlike one team who just wants to score, once.

“Next Goal Wins” is a flick about the worst team in the game.

Deco asked the guys how they planned on turning their losing streak into a win.

“Next Goal Wins” is a hilarious take of a true underdog story, and American Samoa was that scoreless team.

Maybe intimidating the other team will help?

Taika Waititi/ director and co-writer: “Generically, call it a war dance, which is kind of accurate, but it’s used in very many different situations. You’ll often have it in funerals, in weddings, to honor people.”

For actor-director, Taika Waititi, who is a Pacific Islander himself, getting revved up before a game was important to capture.

Taika Waititi: “It’s a very strong part of that culture, in Pacific Island cultures, and yeah, it’s a very beautiful thing and to show it on screen. It’s a sacred thing to us, but also I think it translates, it comes through the screen and I think audiences also feels that energy as well.”

What would yours sound like?

Taika Waititi: “Well, I’m not going to make up one right here, but I wouldn’t make up one cause there’s hundreds of different Haka.”

They might be the worst soccer team in the world but…

Taika Waititi: “It’s a story about triumph over adversity. That’s really the thing that attracted me to this.”

Soccer player Jaiyah Saelua, was the real life inspiration for the film and also a subject of the team’s documentary.

We asked how Taika’s film stacks up to the doc.

Jaiyah Saelua: “Oh dangerous question. I am satisfied and I love how this film turned out and how he was able to capture the true essence of the team. Those important things are true to the documentary and our true story. But then of course Taika will do what he wants with his films and it just turned out really well.”

Catch “Next Goal Wins” in theaters this Friday.

Feel the Christmas spirit at the Third Annual Wonderland Holiday Experience in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/entertainment/feel-the-christmas-spirit-at-the-third-annual-wonderland-holiday-experience-in-fort-lauderdale/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 01:50:10 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380761 With temps in the 80s, getting in the Christmas spirit can be challenging in SoFlo. But a new event in Broward will make you feel like you’re in a winter wonderland, minus the freezing temps.

Here’s a guy who’s cool as a cucumber, what’s up Alex Miranda. How do you like being compared to a cucumber?

Fort Lauderdale Beach. It’s that time of year again.

Arianne Glassman: “While it might be 90 degrees here in South Florida, we are bringing that traditional winter time experience.”

For all of us to pretend like, you know, we live in one of those chilly little Hallmark movie towns, because at the Third Annual Wonderland Holiday Experience, all the way through Jan. 1, everything but the weather feels like true winter time.

How many lights are there hung up?

Arianne Glassman: “Over 50,000 lights in the park.”

Including the 4,000 square foot rink at Las Olas Ocean side park.

Arianne Glassman: “Large enough for about 50 skaters to really skate comfortably. Once you get the hang of it, it is super fun.”

Ice-skating by the ocean under palm trees; it’s signature South Florida.

Daniel Herrera: “This is definitely not ice and it’s very interesting because it feels so smooth.”

But remember, this is Fort Lauderdale, not Fargo.

Arianne Glassman: “This is a synthetic polymer. It is a dual layer that is infused with a lubricant, so every time you skate on it, it kicks up little flakes off snow.”

And with the DJ at the center, you don’t have to just listen to your favorite holiday tunes.

Arianne Glassman: “We are pumping out amazing music.”

Daniel Herrera: “We got to go a little bit fast and she was having a lot of fun.”

With special themed days and nights, it’s wonderful for everyone.

Arianne Glassman: “We have a Monday and Wednesday for our seniors, 55, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for our parents with little ones. Those are 30 minutes skates that are at a reduced price. Our normal hour-long skates, Wednesday night Girls night out, Glam and Glide, we have a Saturday skate for couples, we have throwback Thursdays, we are inviting all of our college students to come out on Monday. “

Daniel Herrera: “She was just going around and she was just going on the little chair and everything, she was having a lot, a lot of fun.”

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for kid and $18 for teens.

Glamorous fashion styles for this holiday season https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/glamorous-fashion-styles-for-this-holiday-season/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 01:24:05 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380770 I love getting dressed up for the holidays, but I need to know exactly what to where to dinners and parties. Thank your lucky stars, we have an expert fashionista showing us the latest this holiday season, and it’s very metal this year. Check out the eye-catching looks we found.

Mariah Carey’s defrosted, so that means it’s time for the holidays, and also time to freshen up your holiday wardrobe.

Elysze Held: “Fashion is not fantasy, fashion is reality, and this is the time to make it your reality.”

And the style of this frosty season comes from the brightest of stars. Celebs like Selena Gomez and Demi Moore are glamming up 2023 with gleaming looks.

Elysze Held: “Your edge this season should be a metallic trend. Salma Hayek just wore the most beautiful shimmering gown, the perfect holiday dress.”

SoFlo stylist Elysze Held wants you to shimmer all the way down to your sole.

Elysze Held: “Chunky necklace, a great glitter handbag, sequined handbag, shoes with embellishments.”

Glitzy ‘fits are all the rave here.

Elysze Held: “I’m here at Neiman Marcus in Bal Harbour. It’s really my go-to for luxury shopping. First we’re going to see a silver metallic leather mini dress with Valentino sequins shoes. And of course, diamond earrings.”

Next, this sparkly dress paints the town red with its classic taste.

Elysze Held: “It’s sequins and embellishment, and then it has a cape, which capes are one of the key trends of the season also. The last look is a black column gown with a little bit of bling on it.”

Beach Boutique in Miami Beach will get you into the glittery cheer.

Elysze Held: “I like to come to this place because I am guaranteed I’m going to find something. Varying sizes, prices, everything, you’ll find here.”

Boss lady of this couture shop had 305 peeps in mind when she started.

Patricia Costa: “I wanted it to be the local spot that you can just park your car, grab a pair of jeans, a beautiful dress. It’s really about the locals.”

Having head-turning pieces is their specialty … like this fiery attire.

Patricia Costa: “The red dress is kind of a James Bond kind of gorgeousness. You’re kind of covered looking, but then when you turn around to make the exit, it’s pretty just fabulous.”

The next look is a metallic bronze slip dress that shows off your hard work certified gym bod.

And lastly…

Patricia Costa: “Cape gowns are very in this season. What’s nice about a cape gown is, you really get this old Hollywood glamour, but you can also eat some pasta if you want to. It’s very forgiving and beautiful and easy to wear.”

Leveling up: ‘The Marvels’ star Iman Vellani talks about bringing ‘Ms. Marvel’s’ Kamala Khan to the big screen https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/leveling-up-the-marvels-star-iman-vellani-talks-about-bringing-ms-marvels-kamala-khan-to-the-big-screen/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 01:54:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380172 Marvel has pumped out superhero film after superhero film, and if you thought that they were done, you were very mistaken. Now the MCU has a new movie with three women leading the charge, so we caught up with “The Marvels” and “Ms. Marvel” actress Iman Vellani to talk about her time with the veteran Marvel stars.

Kamala Khan made her debut on Disney plus’ show “Ms. Marvel.” Now actress Iman Vellani is bringing her to the big screen in “The Marvels.”

Iman Vellani: “I’ve learned so much from Brie and Teyonah working with them on and off screen. Sam Jackson, like, there was a lot of very, very sweet moments on set, everyone was very protective over each other.”

Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury): “Friends of yours?”

Iman Vellani (as Kamala Khan): “Hi.”

Iman says Kamala has grown since fans last saw her.

Iman Vellani: “She’s leveled up since the TV show. We got to do a lot of cool parkour stuff. She’s like jumping off the walls, creating different shapes with her hard light. This girl is advanced. Then, to have like this handcuff moment where they’re all switching powers, it creates these amazing fight scenes, and it’s so well choreographed, so well-directed, It’s like, honestly, one of my favorite fight scenes in the entire MCU.”

And, along with all the cool fight scenes, fans will definitely get a sense of nostalgia.

Iman Vellani: “It genuinely feels like one of those ’80s superhero movies that are, like, so earnest, and it makes you feel like you’re reading a comic book when you’re watching this film.”

Tessa Thompson (as Valkyrie): “You can stand tall without standing alone.”

Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury) “They’re here.”

“The Marvels” is now playing in theaters.

Golden Girls Kitchen pop-up in Wynwood lets you step into the world of the celebrated sitcom https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/golden-girls-kitchen-pop-up-in-wynwood-lets-you-step-into-the-world-of-the-celebrated-sitcom/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 05:42:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380069 “The Golden Girls” have had our hearts since the iconic sitcom hit the airwaves almost four decades ago. But today, the spirit of the four leading ladies lives on at the Golden Girls Kitchen, a new pop-up restaurant where you’ll have as many good times as Blanche had first dates.

Are you a Sophia?

Guest 1: “This is like a dream come true. Like, I cried when i walked in.”

Alex Miranda: “Did you?!”

Guest 1: “I did. I was teary-eyed.”

Rose…

Guest 2: “My whole family has always compared me to Rose, because I’m kind of an airhead, you know?

Alex Miranda: “Wait, I’m a little Rose, too.”

Dorothy…

Guest 3: “The sarcasm, the drama.”

Alex Miranda: “Is that you, the drama?”

Guest 3: “Absolutely! Everything!”

Or Blanche?

Alex Miranda: “Are we Blanche of the same reason?”

Guest 4: “Yes. I love men.”

[Alex falls to the floor laughing.]

Either way, you’re probably a “Golden Girls” fan –still — after the the hilarious sitcom, which took place in Miami, premiered in 1985.

Nyeri Stepanian: “‘Golden Girls’ is one of those things that, even today, the jokes still fly.”

And, at the Golden Girls Kitchen, open in Wynwood until Dec. 31, you won’t just see the show, you’ll get to taste it, too!

Nyeri Stepanian: “Baked lasagna made from scratch. We’re talking real local cheesecake. Everything is handmade.”

Guest 2: “The food was fantastic. I had the margarita as well. Amazing. I was tempted to get another one.”

Yes, it’s a real restaurant, with real cocktails…

Nyeri Stepanian: “We’re going to get you a lanai cooler.”

…and bartenders.

Alex Miranda: “I feel like Blanche would have flirted with him. I mean, don’t you think?”

Nyeri Stepanian: “I mean, he’s gorgeous. We’re going to shoot over him in a minute with that beard over there.”

Perfect time to move on to Blanche Devereaux’s boudoir.

Alex Miranda: “What are we going to witness inside of there?”

Nyeri Stepanian: “Well, we always tell people, ‘Don’t get in the bed, you can sit on the bed for a photo moment,’ because she was a freaky lady, and we don’t know where she’s been.”

Complete with shag carpet and a palm print bedspread.

Tickets start at $34. Each comes with 90 minutes to dine, choice of an entree, and most importantly, cheesecake.

Guest 1: “I traveled from Texas to be in character here. I watch ‘Golden Girls’ at night and wake up to it in the morning.”

2nd Pompano Beach Drone Show Extravaganza to take over skies above Fisher Family Pier https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/2nd-pompano-beach-drone-show-extravaganza-to-take-over-skies-above-fisher-family-pier/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 05:28:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380066 This weekend, Pompano Beach is gonna be lit. The sky over the ocean will be filled with lights — and not the kind supplied by stars. Drones will dance above your head, and you will be thoroughly amazed.

Man in “Superman” show: “Look up in the sky! It’s a bird!”

Woman in “Superman” show: “It’s a plane!”

It most certainly is not. It’s the second annual Pompano Beach Drone Show Extravaganza at Fisher Family Pier.

Sandra King: “It’s a night of family fun, cool entertrainment.”

This Saturday’s event is bound to be twice as nice as last year.

Sandra King: “We added a show, so we have two shows, one at 7 p.m., one at 9 p.m.”

You want more? You got it. More shows, more lights.

Sandra King: “Not only are we doubling up on shows, but we’ve added another 100 drones to each show. It was 200 drones, which was amazing. Now it’s gonna be 300 drones. It is such a cool thing to watch.”

Getting the full impact will require getting your eyes and ears involved.

Sandra King: “And it’s all choreographed to music. It’s a futuristic music.”

There’s a special theme to this year’s show. Actually, there are two themes that are sharing the evening.

Sandra King: “Because we’re doing the drone show annually on Veterans Day, or Veterans Day weekend, basically, we decided this year it was going to be a patriotic theme, mixed in with a nautical theme.”

But not all the entertainment will be going down over your head.

Sandra King: “We are putting a band on the pier and a DJ, so starting at 5:30, people can get here early and enjoy the vibe, listen to the music.”

Don’t worry. You and yours won’t be hungry.

Sandra King: “People can eat right here in the Fishing Village. We have restaurants like Oceanic, where we’re at now, right on the ocean. We have Beach House, we have Lucky Fish.”

Here’s a important tip. If you want to really see the light show in all its glory, listen up.

Sandra King: “Three hundred drones are all staged north of the pier. They’re on tarps, and they go out over the ocean and over the pier, and then they face south, so everybody needs to be south of the pier to get a good look at this incredible drone show.”

NightGarden’s 5th year at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden features more lights, new installations https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/nightgardens-5th-year-at-fairchild-tropical-botanic-garden-features-more-lights-new-installations/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 04:20:33 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380055 Dua Lipa once said, “Baby, you can find me under the lights,” and those are words I took to heart. Some people out there are already putting their Christmas lights up, but tonight, Deco’s looking to deck the halls in a different way. The NightGarden is back, and we’re dashing off to SoFlo’s own whimsical wonderland.

When the sun goes down in SoFlo, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables…

Archie the Talking Tree: “Welcome to the NightGarden. I’ve always wanted to say that on Deco Drive.”

…comes alive! The NightGarden is back for its fifth year.

Nannette Zapata: “When you step into NightGarden at Fairchild, you’re stepping into a wonderland. You’re stepping into an experience, an immersive experience.”

And it’s brighter than ever before.

Daniel Wu: “This year we have over two to three thousand different types of lights. And fun fact, this is the most lights there’s ever been for a NightGarden.”

NightGarden is known for its dazzling, colorful lights, and this year, there’s even more cool areas to explore.

Nannette Zapata: “We have about seven or eight new installations, new activations, including a fairy village.”

Daniel Wu: “There’s different triggers and special effects that, as you walk through it, you basically change the lighting.”

Dorothy’s yellow brick road has got nothing on this rainbow walkway.

Another new addition: the linear palm trees.

Daniel Wu: “From a distance, it looks like a pencil drawing, right? It looks like a line that comes down with our rope lights.”

It wouldn’t be the NightGarden without Archie, the famous talking tree

Archie the Talking Tree: “I’m not going anywhere. I’ve been around for 135 years.”

One hundred and thirty-five years? OK, drop the skin care routine!

Archie the Talking Tree: “Well, I use Oil of Olay. It can help you look younger, too. It’s great.”

Turns out, Archie is also a huge Deco Drive fan.

Archie the Talking Tree: “Lynn and Shireen, muchos besos y abrazos.”

Archie’s not the only returning favorite. The Rainbow Rainforest will make you feel like you’ve been transported to another world.

And these giant spinning lanterns are totally enchanting.

No wonderland is complete without a little adventure.

Nannette Zapata: “When you come to NightGarden at Fairchild, you find magic.”

And that’s where the Fairyscope app comes into play.

Daniel Wu: “It is an augmented reality app. You can download it once you’re on site, and then you’re on a scavenger hunt around the entire garden.”

Fairies, lights, magic, and Archie the Talking Tree?! Count me in!

The NightGarden is open now thru Jan. 7. Tickets start at $25.

Local chefs give sneak peek at dishes they’re featuring at 10th South Florida Seafood Festival https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/local-chefs-give-sneak-peek-at-dishes-theyre-featuring-at-10th-south-florida-seafood-festival/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 05:46:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379704 Seafood is a delicacy here in SoFlo, and it’s not hard to sea why. Being surrounded by water has its perks, and one of them is the South Florida Seafood Festival. Here’s a sneak peek.

There’s no need to “go fish” at the South Florida Seafood Festival, because they’ve got plenty to go around.

Sarah Porter: “South Florida Seafood Festival is back for its 10th year in a row. It’s iconic, 10th-year anniversary, in the heart of Coconut Grove at Regatta Park. It’s an amazing, family-focused, community-centric event with a lot for everyone to see and do.”

This year’s event, presented by Swarm, features tons of live entertainment and over 30 seafood pop-ups serving up all kinds of delicious dishes from under the sea.

Samuel E. Wright (as Sebastian, singing): “Under the sea, under the sea!”

But it’s not just about eating and drinking.

Sarah Porter: “One really cool component that we have is called Kitchen Lab, where we have all kinds of chefs from all over South Florida on stage presenting some iconic dishes.”

One of those chefs is Ari Taymor from Pez Loco in Wynwood!

Chef Ari Taymor: “We take a lot of inspiration from the west coast of Mexico, and we like to filter that through the use of local Florida ingredients.”

Deco got a sneak peek of the dish he’ll be teaching folks how to make at the festival.

Chef Ari Taymor: “We’re gonna be demo-ing our Sinaloan shrimp cocktail. It’s very lightly oil-poached fresh Gulf shrimp and a green salsa made from different chilis, tomatillos and green onion.”

Add some avocado, and you’re good to go.

Chef Ari Taymor: “It’s something that is like a restaurant-quality dish, but it’s also created to allow people to make it at home. We want everybody to understand what we’re doing, to be able to share the food that we’re super passionate about, and we’re super excited for that.”

Over at Caja Caliente in Coral Gables, Chef Mika Leon is cooking up Cuban comfort food.

And she’s ready to share her food at the festival.

Chef Mika Leon: “I am extremely excited to be part of the seafood festival this weekend. We’re ready to showcase our seafood and just flavors that we grew up eating and that we make at the restaurant.”

That’s why she’s going with a classic for her Kitchen Lab presentation.

Chef Mika Leon: “I’m going to be making tostones rellenos de camarones enchilados. It’s using fresh shrimp, and it’s made in a sofrito tomato-based sauce, and it’s gonna be homemade tostones rellenos.”

Chef Mika puts it all together by stuffing the tostones with avocado and topping it all with the shrimp. Think of it as happiness in a little edible bowl.

Chef Mika Leon: “It’s something that’s very tropical, Miami, Cuban and authentic, and I think they’re really gonna enjoy it.”

Wanna make a splash this weekend? We’re giving away four VIP tickets to the South Florida Seafood Festival this Sunday, Nov. 12, at Regatta Park in Coconut Grove. For a chance to win, send your name and phone number to giveaways@wsvn.com.

Hip-hop producer Swizz Beats and son Nasir Dean share love of hot rides in new Hulu series https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/hip-hop-producer-swizz-beats-and-son-nasir-dean-share-love-of-hot-rides-in-new-hulu-series/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 05:20:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379699 We can’t call ourselves Deco Drive without sometimes mentioning other things that drive. You know, like cars … and now we can talk about things that drive.

The legendary hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz is bringing his love for hot rides to the small screen, and Deco has all the deets.

For nearly three decades, Grammy Award-winning producer and hip-hop icon Swizz Beatz has shared his love of music with the world.

Now the artist is switching gears and inviting fans into his life in the fast lane, with his new show “Drive with Swizz Beatz.”

Swizz Beats: “My passion for cars started in the Bronx, and traveling also. Being into design and going to different car manufacturers around the world and really seeing the dynamics of what goes into these things that we like to spend our money on.”

Swizz is not in it alone. Along for the ride is his oldest son, and fellow car enthusiast recording artist Nasir Dean.

Nasir Dean: “This journey for me, it was impeccable. There was no better way to spend that time period. We’re happy that we got to show people that we could be together and spend that time together, and hopefully we inspire many more people to spend time with their loved ones.”

In the new Hulu Original, the father-and-son duo travel around the world exploring unique car cultures, hoping to bridge a gap between different automobile and cultural communities.

Nasir Dean: “What you see in ‘Drive’ is a blueprint to learning how to find your drive and how to become the ultimate version of yourself.”

The love for fine automobiles doesn’t stop with the men in the family. Swizz says his wife, Alicia Keys, fits right in.

Swizz Beats: “She’s a big car collector, she’s a fast driver.”

But Unlike Swizz and the kid, Alicia prefers to support from a distance. You know, on paved streets.

Swizz Beats: “She’s happy that the show is over. Because we were drifting through mountains in Japan and dune riding, and she’s a little nervous for us, but she supports the show.”

Nasir Dean: “She’s definitely excited.”

As for where the show can go next? Nasir has his mind set on a sunny location our viewers may be familiar with.

Nasir Dean: “We need to come to Miami. I’m from Miami, so we’re brainstorming about that episode.”

Along with the show, the pair also have their individual music projects on the way.

Swizz Beats: “I got a project called ‘NSX.’ The date is to be determined.”

Nasir Dean: “I got my album ‘Note Fury’ dropping next year, probably the beginning of next year.”

You can catch all six episodes of “Drive with Swizz Beatz” on Hulu beginning Nov. 16.

Zen Mystery, cafe and cultural event center in Dania Beach, invites you to chill and unwind https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/zen-mystery-cafe-and-cultural-event-center-in-dania-beach-invites-you-to-chill-and-unwind/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 05:33:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379327 We all have plenty on our plates these days. Sometimes you just need to chill and unload. There’s a South Florida spot that knows how to help you do exactly that … and how they do it is no mystery.

Not many local places have songs written about them. Then again, Zen Mystery isn’t like most places.

Denis Soukhanov: “Zen Mystery is a community space where we host a bunch of eclectic events, from spiritual to cultural to musical.”

This husband-and-wife operation has been a fixture on the Dania Beach scene for over a decade. It’s come a long way since its early days.

Denis Soukhanov: “We didn’t really know what we were doing, so originally, it was supposed to be a little yoga meditation spot, and it kind of evolved over time to people from all walks of life supporting art, original art.”

You’re guaranteed to decompress before the work week gets too heavy.

Denis Soukhanov: “We start the week with Monday night yoga, then we continue into Wednesday meditation.”

You can unblock your chakras and pick up some tchotchkes while you’re there.

Denis Soukhanov: “We just offer people small gifts — crystals, little knickknacks from all over the world. We have a lot of books, people come play games, too.”

Games aren’t the only things people play at Zen. The place is known for its Friday open mic night.

You might hear some heartfelt poetry…

Poet: “You’re my lost love, I don’t know if I’ll ever find you again.”

Check out a sensitive singer-songwriter…

Matthew Auerbach: “I think of you by candlelight, when memory grows soft.”

Even a tune about the Corleone family isn’t out of the question.

Singer-songwriter: “Singing about the Godfather blues.”

Denis Soukhanov: “It’s all local, original acts. It’s amazing.”

Food also plays a big part in Zen’s identity.

Denis Soukhanov: “And we do offer organic, gluten-free cuisine. We might be the longest-running vegan restaurant in Broward and Dade County.”

There are dishes here that demand your attention.

Denis Soukhanov: “People say we have one of the best vegan pad thais in the world — top five, somebody said. Now we just added vegan crab cakes.”

Do not — I repeat, do not — leave without trying their special dessert. They won’t serve you a piece of vegan pie they wouldn’t eat themselves.

Denis Soukhanov: “We only make what we like, because if the people don’t eat it, we’ve gotta eat it, so we only offer the best.”

Irina Samarkina: “I love it, and I love the atmosphere. It feels like home, and it’s so chill and relaxing.”

In ‘Your Lucky Day,’ late ‘Euphoria’ star Angus Cloud plays killer chasing after winning lottery ticket https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/in-your-lucky-day-late-euphoria-star-angus-cloud-plays-killer-chasing-after-winning-lottery-ticket/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 05:08:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379323 People will do crazy things for money … even criminal things. In the new picture “Your Lucky Day,” the late Angus Cloud makes some questionable choices in order to secure a winning lottery ticket. So we sat down with his co-star Jason O’Mara to see what it was like to work on the film.

Angus Cloud (as Sterling): “A hundred and fifty-six million! Give me that ticket right now!”

If secrets had price tags, the secret in “Your Lucky Day” would be in the millions.

Mousa Hussein Kraish (as Amir): “What’s your plan?”

Angus Cloud (as Sterling): “I’m not going to hold you hostage.”

In one of his final film roles, “Euphoria” actor Angus Cloud stars as a killer trying to cover up a double murder after getting the winning lottery ticket.

Jason O’Mara (as Captain Rutledge): “Who’s inside, huh? How’d that happen?”

Alongside Angus is actor Jason O’Mara, who plays Captain Rutledge.

Jason O’Mara: “Playing someone whose morals have been compromised is quite refreshing, actually. In a way, he represents every hardworking American who’s just trying to make ends meet, working hard in his chosen profession.”

Jason now has a new perspective on the time she shared with Angus, off screen and on.

Jason O’Mara: “I didn’t have a huge amount of scenes with Angus, but working with him, meeting him and hanging out with him was fun at the time, but now that he’s gone, that takes on this whole other sort of meaning, really.”

Character in “Your Lucky Day”: “They don’t arrest cop killers. They execute them.”

Character in “Your Lucky Day”: “Give us the ticket, we’ll let you walk away.”

We wanted to know, what would Jason do if he had the $156 million ticket in real life?

Jason O’Mara: “It’s an interesting question, I hope that in real life I can act a little more stand-up than my character, but yeah, I hope I would do the right thing there.”

Jessica Garza (as Ana Marlene): “Back away, or I will burn this ticket!”

The film was completed before Angus passed away back in July. You can watch it in theaters this Friday.

Jason O’Mara is an ambassador of Movember a global charity that raises awareness of men’s health issues. For more information on Movember check out their website here.

Explore the anchovy craze in unique ways at 2 South Florida restaurants https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/explore-the-anchovy-craze-in-unique-ways-at-2-south-florida-restaurants/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 01:11:16 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378801 Anchovies aren’t just for pizza. They’re a whole new trend that’s taking the world on a new flavorful ride. The tin fish craze just reached Miami and there’s a few new spots that know how to spice it up.

So we checked them out to see what the hype is all about and see the different ways you can enjoy this brand-new trend.

No need to be scared of anchovies, because the tin fish trend at Margot Natural Wine Bar is ready to rock your taste buds.

Ashley Abodeely: “Here at Margot, our take is really simple: our wine is uniqu,e and it really balances the flavors of some the tin fish flavors that we get and gives the guests a really unique experience.”

Tin fish might seem simple, but the Wine Bar knows how to make it shine.

Ashley Abodeely: “We’re using housemade pickles, fresh vegetables, saltine crackers, grilled bread, as well as whipped butter that’s cultured and seasoned. Each tin fish comes with its own special and unique bite to compliment the flavors of each one.”

There’s three different options you can try with your vino, like their salmon with some chili crunch.

Ashley Abodeely: “It’s a little spicy, a little sweet, yet crunchy, and it really compliments what we add on the plate.”

It’s not your simple sardines in a can.

Ashley Abodeely: “This one comes with hot peppers. The fattiness of the sardines really compliments the sweetness and the spiciness of the hot peppers.”

And the star of the show, Mr. Anchovy.

Ashley Abodeely: “Really, really savory, so we do add some whipped butter and grilled bread to compliment the savoriness and the saltiness of the anchovies.”

Antonella Santomauro: “I would have never thought about pairing tin fish with wine. I really love the experience, I really enjoyed it, and I will come back.”

Ashley Abodeely: “The tin fish to me really, really shines, to have unique flavors that really compliment on the wine we sell and to really balance out the menu that we have.”

Over at Vinya Table in Coral Gables, they’re sprucing up their tin fish with some sweetness.

Allegra Angelo: “Our take on the anchovy is that we dress it up a little bit, and we mitigate a little bit of the brininess by adding an orange honey butter on the anchovy, which kind of softens the flavor and makes it a little sweet and tangy, and also makes it really good with wine.”

What’s a little wine without a charcuterie board?

Allegra Angelo: “What’s great also about our anchovies is that you can also add them as a supplemental to our cheese and charcuterie board, so an anchovy with a really nice, hard-aged cheddar cheese is delicious. An anchovy on top of a prosciutto is amazing.”

Cindy Ferreio: “The anchovy toastada was delicious. I loved how it was an actual toast with a little bit of honey butter, which it brought out the saltiness of the anchovy and paired perfectly with my martini.”

Allegra Angelo: “The flavors, very small but very intense, and that’s the best way to eat. You don’t want something large and big to get a lot of flavors. So all you need is a little bit to go a long way, and to me, that’s the greatest thing about tin fish.”

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/showtime-365/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 00:47:12 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378795 What goes on in the mind of a murderer, the results of a wish gone wrong, the journey of history’s most famous parents and sisterhood is truly powerful.

All this, and more, is coming your way on this week’s Showtime.

The Marvels

Girls may rule the world, but “The Marvels” can save the universe.

Brie Larson’s back as Captain Marvel in this latest MCU offering that proves three super-powered females are better than one.

“It’s a Wonderful Knife”

“It’s a Wonderful Knife” is just the kind of Christmas slasher movie you’ve been waiting for. The film’s a gory retelling of the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” — except this time around, angels don’t get their wings, they get cut to pieces.

“Journey to Bethlehem”

The story of Joseph and Mary and the birth of Jesus Christ is retold with lots of music in “Journey to Bethlehem.” You hear a mix of modern pop songs and classic Christmas melodies as you watch the greatest story ever told.

“Rumble Through the Dark”

Just when Aaron Eckhart thinks he’s through fighting, he gets pulled back in. “Rumble Through the Dark” is the story of one man’s struggle to save his family home.
Bella Thorne co-stars.

“The Killer”

Being a murderer for hire takes a certain mindset. Michael Fassbender has it down in spades. In “The Killer,” he plays a hit man on a mission to right a job gone wrong.

Dance to the beat all night long at Kemistry Nightclub in Fort Lauderdale https://wsvn.com/entertainment/dance-to-the-beat-all-night-long-at-kemistry-nightclub-in-fort-lauderdale/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 01:03:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378492 This is music to our ears. A new club has opened its doors in SoFlo.

In this joint, the beat goes on forever and the party never ends. It’s a perfect example of what happens when you create the right “Kemistry.”

Fort Lauderdale night life just got a big shot in the arm. Kemistry Nightclub is ready to do business.

Angel Candelaria: “Kemistry Nightclub is the newest nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. We’re very focused on electronic music.”

The guys in charge really know what you want when it comes to late-night action.

Angel Candelaria: “What’s gonna separate us is our attention to detail since all the partners are promoters, we’re all about the experience customers will have an immersive experience.”

Other clubs play electronic dance music, but you’ve never heard or felt EDM the way you will at Kemistry.

Angel Candelaria: “Our sound lights and production is the best in Fort Lauderdale, bar none.

Kemistry was created to shine a spotlight on EDM and return it to its former glory as the music of the night.

Angel Candelaria: “That is what my partners and I we all love, we’ve been doing it for a lot of years and we feel like Fort Lauderdale needs a club that is more focused on that than anything else. But lately, it has kinda fallen off so we feel like we can bring that back.”

The idea is to make the Fort Lauderdale music scene as good, if not better, than its neighbor to the south.

Angel Candelaria: “I think Miami has kind of taken the reins for electronic music now and the Fort Lauderdale thing kinda fell off. The people in Broward are dying for a place where they don’t have to drive to go hear world-class deejays.”

You’ll dance, you’ll party, you’ll drink. There are specialty cocktails waiting for you here.

Angel Candelaria: “The Big Bang is our mango margarita with tequila and fresh ingredients. The Pink Molecule has Mezcal, cilantro and watermelon.”

They also offer up a smokey concoction named after a notorious television character.

Angel Candelaria: “The Walter White contains gin fresh cucumber and fresh mint.”

Whether you brave it out on the dance floor or hang out upstairs above the action, you’ll get the Kemistry Nightclub experience full-on.

Angel Candelaria: “Our venue, it may seem large, but it’s very intimate. Also, no matter where you are in the club, you get to have a good sight line of the deejay, you’ll get to hear the deejay and you’ll be close enough where you can feel like you’re part of the party.”

Experience South Dade’s cultural farming communities as Miami-Dade County celebrates Farmers Month https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/experience-south-dades-cultural-farming-communities-as-miami-dade-county-celebrates-farmers-month/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 01:00:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378463 Miami-Dade County is internationally known for it world-class beaches, fabulous restaurants and a big party scene … but we have much more to offer than that, like our agricultural scene just south of Miami’s urban core.

Alex Miranda joins us live from the By Brothers Family Park in South-Dade to tell us all about it.

Lace up your sneakers and pile on the sunscreen, because Miami-Dade’s Farmers Month is in full swing.

Miranda Kellog: “This is our second year of the Miami-Dade Farmers Month. It is a fabulous addition to the Miami Temptations Program, where we focus on celebrating South-Dade’s cultural farming communities.”

No, we are not talking about planting seeds and riding on tractors. We mean tons of outdoor fun your entire family can enjoy, at a fraction of the cost.

Miranda Kellog: “It’s a great way to experience a different side to Miami-Dade County that they may not have been familiar with. Just a short drive away, they can tap into some really great deals, tours and celebrate the farming community that is in South-Dade.”

And the airboat tour ride at Gator Park, sitting on the edge of the Everglades, is a great place to start.

John Jones: “You’re enjoying the environment itself because it’s a unique wetland river, you know? And the fact that you can ride a boat over the shallow water is interesting within itself.”

Out on your ride, you’ll get to see all that the Everglades has to offer. From birds hanging around, checking you out, and of course, alligators.

But the fun doesn’t stop in the water at Gator Park.

John Jones: “When they come back from the boat ride, then you see a wildlife show; it’s usually about 20 minutes long. Basically, it’s an educational talk about the alligators. It’s not really wrestling with them or manhandling them. It’s just learning a little bit about them and seeing their behavior.”

If by chance you want to see more animals when you leave Gator Park, then head on over to By Brothers Family Park, because they have lots of them.

Daniela Guzman: “We have birds, we have animals, a petting farm, an aviary that’s beautiful.”

With more than 35 different species of birds and several petting zoos, there’s plenty to do.

Daniela Guzman: “What I want kids and families to take away from a day at the farm is stepping away from the technology and their daily routine and enjoy a different kind of day where they can interact with animals that they don’t commonly see at home.”

And that includes a personal experience with Vivi.

Daniela Guzman: “We are actually offering for Farmers Month an exclusive encounter with Vivi, our kinkajou, which is one our exotic animals that kids love, and they go crazy with it.”

Guest will get to feed her, hold her and take pictures with the animal.

Daniela Guzman: “Inside the aviary, there Vivi, there are pigeons, the peacocks and all the birds, but we also have bunnies.”

Along with animals, By Brothers offers a bunch of other exhilarating activities, like a jump pad, go-cart riding and a train ride.

Miranda Kellog: “There are so many great deals to take advantage of, and they are right in your own backyard.”

Gator Park and By Brothers Family Park are not the only parks giving up exclusive deals for Farmers Month.

Showtime https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/showtime-364/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 22:15:47 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378021 Trick or treat! OK, so Halloween is over, but don’t be bummed. This week’s Showtime is full of treats, and that’s no trick.

Ari Cohen (as Paul Beaulieu): “What is the intent here, Mr. Presley? You’ve got women throwing themselves at you. Why my daughter?”

Jacob Elordi (as Elvis Presley): “Well, sir, I happen to be very fond of your daughter.”

They’re all shook up! Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s love story is front and center in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.”

The film, starring Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny, is based on the real Priscilla’s memoir, “Elvis and Me,” and it explores the famous couple’s relationship, from their first meeting and marriage to their eventual divorce. We finally see their story from Priscilla’s point of view.

Bella Thorne (as Ziva): “This crisis has a name: Divinity.”

Sci-fi meets horror in “Divinity.” The movie revolves around a serum for immortality and the man who controls it.

Problem is, the drug affects fertility, and that’s bad news for the planet. The movie stars Bella Thorne and Stephen Dorff.

Daisy Ridley (as Helena Pelletier: “What are you doing in my house?”

Garrett Hedlund (as Stephen Pelletier): What’s going on?”

Yanna McIntosh (as Agent Lorna Illing: “Your father, Jacob Holbrook. When was the last time you spoke to him?”

Daisy Ridley (as Helena Pelletier): “When I was 10 years old.”

The past comes back to haunt Daisy Ridley in the psychological thriller “The Marsh King’s Daughter.” She plays a young woman who spent her childhood in captivity.

When her estranged, kidnapper father breaks out of prison, she’s gotta use everything she knows to outmaneuver the man who taught her how to survive in the wilderness.

Julia Michael (as Cinnameg, voice): “We’ve gotta launch Santa’s sleigh before that storm hits.”

Character in “Glisten and the Merry Mission”: “I don’t suppose you know where to find another reindeer.”

Tinity Bliss (as Marzipan, voice): “Glisten.”

‘Tis the season! And sometimes, that means chaos.

Christmas is in trouble in the new animated film “Glisten and the Merry Mission,” and it’s up to one little elf to find the magic and save the day.

Airport employee on intercom: “Attention, Boston and Austin passengers. Those flights have been delayed until further notice.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Just those two flights?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Just us.”

Airport employee on intercom: “Yes.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “That’s…”

Meg Ryan (as Willa) and David Duchovny (as Bill): “Unbelievable.”

What happens at the airport, ends up on the big screen, especially when Meg Ryan and David Duchovny are involved.

In “What Happens Later,” the two stars play exes who get stranded at an airport together after meeting again for the first time in years. Will sparks start flying?

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “If we could see our memories in advance, would we do anything different?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Please don’t ruin this.”

‘Thanksgiving in a cup’: Salt & Straw turns traditional holiday dishes into tasty ice cream flavors https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/thanksgiving-in-a-cup-salt-straw-turns-traditional-holiday-dishes-into-tasty-ice-cream-flavors/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 04:17:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377941 It’s November, so you know what that means: turkey time, baby!

Thanksgiving is slowly creeping up on us, but you don’t have to wait until the end of the month to get a taste. Deco’s checking out a spot that scooping up some fall flavors.

Woody Harrelson (as Woody Boyd): “Hey, you guys, this is Thanksgiving, and I still say this is gonna be the greatest.”

So much for wishful thinking. But if you want to make sure your thanksgiving ends on a sweet note instead of a food fight, Salt & Straw on Lincoln Road has you covered.

Frank Hernandez-Lara: “We’re doing a Thanksgiving feast in the form of ice cream.”

Oh, like traditional dessert, right?

: “We’ll have a dinner roll ice cream. We have a turkey stuffing/cranberry sauce flavor. We have mango pie. We also have a pumpkin gingersnap pie, and we have a cheesy potato casserole.”

Turkey stuffing as ice cream?! OK, we’ll get back to that main course.

But first, the sides.

The Parker House Rolls With Salted Buttercream ice cream definitely won’t put you to sleep.

Melanie Trujillo: “It tasted like a caramel cake, almost. It tasted very salt and sweet. It was actually really good; you didn’t have to tell me twice to keep eating it, honestly.”

And, when it comes to the cheesy potato casserole…

Melanie Vega: “The first thing that I instantly tasted was cheese, a little bit of cheese and then the potato, ’cause there’s little bits of potato in it. I thought it was good.”

Being an adult means you can eat dessert first.

Melissa Trujillo: “Today I tried the mango pie ice cream, and I went with that choice because I love mango, I tried it, and it was actually really yummy.”

OK, no more stalling. It’s turkey stuffing and cranberry sauce time.

Don’t all dig in at once.

Melissa Trujillo: “When I first tried it, it was just sausage. But then the cranberry came in and it made it all flow together.”

Melanie Vega: “You definitely do taste the stuffing. There is definitely big piece of the stuffing in it, but you also taste the cranberry.”

Melanie Trujillo: “You have to come try it, just so you can say that you did, just so you can say that you had Thanksgiving in a cup.”

Maty’s, Peruvian spot in Midtown, becomes only Florida restaurant to make Bon Appétit’s 2023 list https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/matys-peruvian-spot-in-midtown-becomes-only-florida-restaurant-to-make-bon-appetits-2023-list/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 03:51:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377934 Being the best at something takes a lot of hard work, and one SoFlo restaurant knows how to be the best. Deco’s checking out a spot in Midtown climbing to the top of the foodie “it” list.

Its name may be short and sweet.

Chef Valerie Chang: “Maty’s is a modern Peruvian restaurant that’s in the heart of Midtown. It was inspired by my grandmother Martha.”

But big things are happening at this SoFlo restaurant.

Chef Valerie Chang: “In the last few months, my brother Nando and I got named Food & Wine Best New Chefs for 2023. Maty’s was on the Bon Appétit top 24 restaurants of 2023, and we also made the 50 best New York Times list this year.”

Deco caught up with Bon Appétit’s Kate Kassin to get the scoop on why Maty’s is the only restaurant in Florida to make the cut.

Kate Kassin: “What I love about their restaurants is just like how important the family aspect is to it. And I mean, it’s a beautiful space, and the food’s delicious, but I think you really feel like it’s a space to celebrate.”

When it comes to the food, Maty’s is all about bringing a taste of Peru to the 3-0-5, but with a unique twist.

Chef Valerie Chang: “These dishes are inspired by traditional Peruvian dishes, but on the eye of someone who left Peru 21 years ago and has been in South Florida, learning about our seasonality, learning about our ingredients, learning about what we offer the table, and marrying the two together.”

That means the menu features dishes like the raw grouper tiradito and the oxtail saltado.

Chef Valerie Chang: “The oxtails are braised for about eight hours, and then they get stir-fried in the wok, and then they’re served on top of Peruvian crispy potatoes.”

Sofia Bodniza: “My favorite thing was the oxtail. Oxtail was incredible. And the tiradito. Very, very good, fresh. Really, really good.”

And you can’t go wrong with the restaurant’s signature fish dish.

Chef Valerie Chang: “Our whole roasted dorade, it’s fire-roasted, and then it goes on top of an aji amarillo beurre blanc.”

Kate Kassin: “You either need a spoon or something to make sure that you sop up every single last drop.”

Sofia Bodniza: “This menu is unlike any other menu I’ve seen. Like everything is super detailed, and you can tell that everything is made with just so much love.”

Sting to perform at 28th annual Make-A-Wish Ball at InterContinental Miami; Deco takes a sneak peek https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/sting-to-perform-at-28th-annual-make-a-wish-ball-at-intercontinental-miami-deco-takes-a-sneak-peek/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 11:59:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377481 The 28th Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball is a combination of art, fashion, music and wishes. Every year tries to top the next, and it’s going down this Saturday.

Deco sat down with the brains of this creative night to hear all about it. Here’s an exclusive sneak peak with gala chair Shareef M. Malnik and actress and filmmaker Gabrielle Anwar.

Wish to see Sting in person? Wish granted.

He’s leaving his mark as the headliner for Intercontinental Miami’s Make-A-Wish Ball.

Shareef M. Malnik: “I’ve been asking Sting to perform for the last five years. Someone asked me this year, ‘Why do you keep asking him?’ I asked because one day he’s going to say yes, and he did say yes this year. We have two missions here. One is that we want to raise as much money as possible, but the most important mission is that people have such a great time they want to come back next year.”

And this year’s theme is…

Shareef M. Malnik: “Oculus is the theme. So, think James Bond, ‘Mission: Impossible,’ Tom Cruise and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’ We have an Aston Martin SUV that’s going to be auctioned off in the ball.”

Gabrielle Anwar: “I get to kind of do one of those advertising bunnies or whatever they’re called. I get to lounge on the car.”

Shareef M. Malnik: “OK, that works.”

Gabrielle Anwar: “It’s helped in the years, I think. Or maybe not — maybe it’s hindered.”

Shareef M. Malnik: “Fortunately, you’re not in a bikini like in ‘Burn Notice.'”

Gabrielle Anwar: “Yeah.”

“Burn Notice” star and South Florida resident Gabrielle Anwar could be soaking in South Beach, but her hubby, chair of this mesmerizing ball, pulled her back into the spotlight as host for the 14th year in a row.

Gabrielle Anwar: “Every year has been memorable for many different reasons. My favorite part of the night is the Make-A-Wish child who gets to share how Make-A-Wish changed their entire perspective of their life.”

A black tie ball is not a ball without fashion on the red carpet.

Gabrielle Anwar: “There’s a lot of glam. There’s a lot of bling. There’s a lot of cleavage. Most of is not real. The dresses are beautiful. There’s a lot of couture.”

With 900 people partying at this posh fundraiser, every year has to be grandiose, even down to the food.

Glenn Sampert, general manager, InterContinental Miami: “We really transform the hotel, from the driveway, to our lobby, to the expanse mezzanine space, and of course, all of our ballrooms. It really is a conversion of InterContinental.”

Store Manager in “Wizards of Waverly Place”: “These sales get crazier and crazier every year.”

Get ready to shop till you drop during Curio at Faena Bazaar’s annual sale.

Danielle Licata: “Curio is a multi-floor shopping experience where you can get men’s, women’s, full lifestyle clothing offerings, from shoes to swim to going out clothes or wedding attire.”

Think all your favorite luxury brands in one place, up to 50% off and up!

Danielle Licata: “Big designers that you guys would definitely know — like Dolce & Gabana and Etro, Zimmermann — to very small brands that are either hand-picked by us through our travels, or things that are made just for us as private label.”

Danielle Licata: “We will have shoes, which we typically never put on sale; they’ll also be 50 to 60% off. We have designers like René Caovilla, Gia Borghini, JW Anderson.”

And it’s never too early to start your holiday shopping!

Danielle Licata: “Also, it’s a great time to find gifts. The holidays are not that far away, so that should be on people’s minds as they’re also looking also for themselves, and there’s amazing designers that are only featured here, and the sale is only once a year.”

You’re not just saving big. It’s also a chance for you to give back.

Danielle Licata: “We do a November sale always for charity. We’re raising money for [American Friends of Magen David Adom], which is a huge Israeli foundation where they’re the only blood and milk bank in Israel.”

Fort Lauderdale to host family-friendly Florida Day of the Dead Celebration in downtown area https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/fort-lauderdale-to-host-family-friendly-florida-day-of-the-dead-celebration-in-downtown-area/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 02:19:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377435 Why didn’t the skeleton want to go to the party? He had no body to go with! Speaking of parties, there’s one you’re not going to want to miss, and it’s happening this weekend in Fort Lauderdale. Deco’s Alex Miranda has the scoop — and the body.

To celebrate Dia de los Muertos, Fort Lauderdale is hosting its 14th annual Florida Day of the Dead Celebration … and trust me, I feel it in my bones that it’s going to be a fun time.

Renée Victor (as Abuelita, voice): “Dia de los Muertos has begun!”

That’s right! And the city of Fort Lauderdale is putting on its 14th Florida Day of the Dead Celebration.

Jim Hammond: “The Florida Day of the Dead Celebration is a downtown, family-friendly festival that takes over corners of Fort Lauderdale and celebrates life through this traditional festival.”

The Mexican tradition is meant to celebrate the dead by dressing up and placing their photos and favorite food on an ofrenda, or offering place.

But, in the words of Abuelita from “Coco”…

Renée Victor (as Abuelita, voice): “Dia de los Muertos is the one night of the year our ancestors can come visit us. We put their photos on the ofrenda so their spirits can cross over.”

Jim Hammond: “There’s so many parts to the festival that people want to experience again and again. The traditional folklorico dancers, traditions that go back hundred of years, the Indigenous music groups.”

And, of course, their fan favorite: the skeleton processional.

Jim Hammond: “People come out, get dressed up as skeletons and celebrate with their own giant skeletons.”

As for how many bare-bone pals take the streets during the parade…

Jim Hammond: “We bring dozens of puppets and skeletons to the procession, but it’s really the audience, it’s the participants who bring hundreds and hundreds of skeletons to the procession.”

But the party isn’t over when the parade stops.

Jim Hammond: “We’re going to have over a dozen food trucks, over 50 craft vendors, music, entertainment and so much more, all the way up until 10 o clock at night. Each of us has someone in our world who we’ve lost and we want to remember. This is a chance for you to come out and celebrate their life in the most playful way. As we say at with Florida Day of the Dead, it’s a memory for the dead but a party for the living.”

The big bash takes place this Saturday starting at 3 p.m.

Meg Ryan steps behind the camera and stars in new rom-com ‘What Happens Later’ opposite David Duchovny https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/meg-ryan-steps-behind-the-camera-and-stars-in-new-rom-com-what-happens-later-opposite-david-duchovny/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 01:28:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377427 Meg Ryan is back where she belongs: starring in a romantic comedy.

Meg shares the screen with David Duchovny in “What Happens Later.” Deco sat down with the pair, who play ex-lovers given the chance by Mother Nature to revisit their relationship.

David Duchovny (as Bill): “How’ve you been?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Oh, for the last 20 years?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Twenty-five, maybe.”

You never know who you’ll bump into in an airport. In “What Happens Later,” former couple Meg Ryan and David Duchovny run into each other and are stranded when a massive storm grounds their flights.

The film marks Meg’s return to acting after an eight-year break, and it was this story that pulled her back in.

Meg Ryan: “I feel like maybe there’s maybe some kind of universal fantasy about it — someone from long ago, you have some unresolved stuff with, you’re stuck with them. Will you resolve those things or not?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “When people break up, there’s the thing that they tell each other, and then there’s the truth, which you never told me.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “I was in love with you, and I couldn’t turn that on and off like a switch.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “I know.”

Meg was originally brought in to direct the movie, which she did. She was searching for the perfect actress for the role of Willa. Then she looked in the mirror.

Meg Ryan: “I tried not to cast myself like crazy, but then I had to. But thankfully I did, because then I was, ‘Who would I be good with?’ And I thought of David.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Relax. You’re already living out your worst-case scenario.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “What, being stuck here with you?”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “Yeah.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “You make a good point.”

“What Happens Later” is basically a dialogue between Meg and David, who plays Bill.

David told Deco he knew it would be a challenge to make this work.

David Duchovny: “I said yes to Meg, you know. I said yes to the script, it was all good, and then I realized, ‘Holy hell, it really is just us two having a conversation for the whole movie. That’s gonna be a ballsy thing to try to pull off.'”

But pull it off they did … and David gives Meg a ton of credit for always keeping the conversation moving.

David Duchovny: “And I think that Meg as a director, doing the pace of it, creating the pace, was able to do that.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “I’ve been 49 forever and ever and ever.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Wow, lucky you. I feel like I’ve been in my 50s since my 20s.”

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “That’s so true.”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “You don’t have to agree with me.”

We had to ask Meg and David one question: who would you most like to be stuck with in an airport?

David Duchovny: “Overnight? A pilot.”

Meg Ryan (laughing): “David Duchovny.”

“What Happens Later” flies into theaters this weekend.

Meg Ryan (as Willa): “If we could see our memories in advance, would we do anything different?”

David Duchovny (as Bill): “Please don’t ruin this.”

‘Now and Then’: Over 4 decades later, Beatles song released with a little help from AI https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/now-and-then-over-4-decades-later-beatles-song-released-with-a-little-help-from-ai/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 00:29:52 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377417 The Beatles are one of the most iconic bands of all time. Now, with the help of new technology, we’re hearing what’s being called the last Beatles song. Here’s the story behind “Now and Then.”

It’s one thing most fans of the Beatles thought they’d never hear again.

The Beatles (singing): “I’m in love with her, and I feel fine.”

The group’s singing together, like the good ol’ days, but thanks to technology…

John Lennon (singing): “I know it’s true, it’s all because of you.”

The Beatles released what’s being described as their final new song together, “Now and Then.”

Director Peter Jackson, who worked on the Hulu documentary “Get Back” featuring the Fab Four, helped the song come to life.

Peter Jackson: “During the course of ‘Get Back,’ we were paying a lot of attention to the technical restoration. That ultimately led us to the technology which allows us to take any soundtrack and split all the different components into separate tracks by sole machine learning.”

Using AI technology, Jackson’s team lifted John Lennon’s voice off a scratchy, overbearing piano recording.

Ringo Starr: “Since Peter took John off and gave him his own track, it’s like John’s there. You know, it’s far out.”

The Beatles (singing): “Now and then I miss you.”

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recorded new parts for the song, and…

Paul McCartney: “On the new record, there’s a guitar solo. We had kept George’s guitar parts from ’95, and I thought, ‘What I’d like to do is a slide guitar solo in George’s style.’ It was really a tribute to George.”

It took more than four decades, but for Beatles fans, it was worth the wait.

Paul McCartney: “To still be working on Beatles music in 2023, wow! We’re actually messing around with state-of-the-art technology.”

John Lennon (singing): “I know it’s true it’s all, because of you.”

The very last Beatles song has been released as a double A-side single with “Love Me Do,” the band’s 1962 debut single.

Tasty bargain: Sérêvène in Miami Beach is extending Miami Spice dinner deal https://wsvn.com/entertainment/deco-drive/tasty-bargain-serevene-in-miami-beach-is-extending-miami-spice-dinner-deal/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 02:36:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377111 SoFlo foodies are ecstatic when Miami Spice rolls around … and really sad to see it go. It’s hard to say goodbye to one of the best dining deals in town.

Good news! One South Beach restaurant thinks Spice is so nice, they’re keeping it around for a little longer.

Sérêvène, the French-Japanese fusion eatery in the Hotel Greystone, just can’t let go of Miami Spice.

Cullen Santos: “We’re extending the opportunity for more locals and new diners to come and visit and experience our cuisine.”

Extending the $60 meal deal through November was a no-brainer for the restaurant. They knew they had something worth repeating.

Cullen Santos: “Given that the reviews that we had, the interaction with our guests at the tables, a lot of, like I said, the locals that came here, their expression overall saying that they really enjoyed the experience.”

This is a perfect opportunity to feast on the foods of award-winning Chef Pawan Pinisetti, or, as he’s known by the staff. Chef P.

You can taste Chef P’s vision in every bite.

Cullen Santos: “And this goes around Chef P’s cuisine, which is simplicity done right. It’s very inticate, but yet fun.”

Intricate simplicity. That pretty much describes your choices that are going to come out of the kitchen, starting with the green pea bisque cappuccino.

Cullen Santos: “Which we’ll warm up, put into a rocks glass, and we’ll put a scoop of minted peas in there, which is a blend of peas, mint, onions.”

That’s topped with a light Alfredo sauce.

Once you’ve downed that, you can dig into an old favorite: beef tartare.

Cullen Santos: “But it’s our take on beef tartare.”

It’s made tableside with chives, red onion, caper berries and garlic aioli.

Or you can go for a forkful of roasted cauliflower in green curry sauce.

What comes next — well, that’s going to knock you out.

Cullen Santos: “Then we’ll do the lobster uni Alfredo: bucatini pasta cooked al dente with butter-poached lobster claw and knuckle meat.”

With a crown of black caviar and sitting in a lake of light Alfredo sauce, it’s heaven on a plate.

The ending of your evening is sweet: foie crème brûlée, fired up to perfection.

Sérêvène’s Miami Spice deal is the tastiest bargain around.

Andrea: “Everything, really, was put together really well. There’s a lot of flavors and things that I wouldn’t naturally expect to go together, and somehow it worked.”

Chelsea Baum: “I think it’s amazing that you’re able to do a date night and do Miami Spice, and I’m so excited that they decided to continue to do it.”
