Miami-Dade County remains waterlogged, with a neighborhood near Northeast 116th Street and 14th Avenue in North Miami still seeing ankle-deep water.

“When it starts flooding, it gets real crazy over here,” said area resident Kevin Jean-Baptiste.

“It’s too much,” said another resident.

Reports of cars submerged and towed away reveal the aftermath of the relentless rain and winds.

Speaking through a translator, a resident who identified herself as Esperanza said the situation is “horrible.” She said her children have not been able to go to school because of the standing water. She said the water is so dirty because of the garbage cans with bacteria and germs.

Jean-Baptiste said the flooding has caused plumbing problems.

“We can’t flush our toilet, take good showers or anything. It’s like really terrible right now,” he said.

Parts of Miami Gardens also face lingering flooding, with streets in the 2200 block of Northwest 170th Street still submerged. Picture sent in by a 7News viewer showed traffic barrels floating on the roadway.

Residents said that in some spots, the standing water is knee-deep.

Residents attribute the recurrent problem to drainage issues, expressing frustration and hoping for a swift resolution.

According to Miami-Dade County Public Works, one of the two pumps in Esperanza and Jean-Baptiste’s neighborhood failed Thursday morning, and crews are currently figuring out how to bring in more pumping power.

For Esperanza, that help can’t come soon enough.

“Bring people who can work on the pumps to get the water out. It’s not fair,” she said.

In Broward County, the situation is equally dire.

Despite considerable improvement in many flood zones over the past 24 hours, a neighborhood off Hiatus Road in Davie remains submerged, leaving residents frustrated.

“Very concerned. It’s only two days of rain and, as you can tell, it’s terrible,” said area resident Ingrid Korkkanem.

Korkkanem said she and her family are halfway through building their dream home, and she can barely come and go with all this standing water.

“I was hoping that they would do something by now, but not yet,” she said.

A homeowner who lives across the submerged street compared his property to an island surrounded by water.

“This is the fourth time this has happened,” he said.

He is unable to leave until the water goes down.

Korkkanem said the neighbors keep an eye on him.

“I think he has someone who comes and bring him supper. We always keep an eye on him,” she said.

The parking lot of a nearby Broward College campus remained flooded on Friday. Classes were canceled for a third consecutive day.

The aerial view from 7Skyforce showed flooded rural areas housing animals. A pasture that several farm animals call home now resembles a swamp. One camel, an animal that can go days without water, was seen wading across the flooded pasture.

The flooding remains a lingering and ongoing concern for residents.

“It’s just very scary and hard when you’re trying to just, you know,” said Korkkanem. “I mean, you work, you have to go to the store and things like that. It didn’t feel like a hurricane or a tropical storm, but it was windy and it was just steady, it didn’t stop raining.”

Despite sunny skies on Friday, parts of South Florida struggled to recover, highlighting the resilience needed to navigate the aftermath of the storm.

Back in North Miami, Jean-Baptiste got his scooter back after it was damaged by floodwaters. He’s hoping South Florida gets a much-needed break from the rain.

“‘Cause it’ll sprinkle for a couple of hours, and it’ll rise up,” he said. “It don’t matter, it just don’t matter. Once any type of rain comes, it starts flooding just like this, and it stays like this for a while.”

Miami-Dade Public Works officials did not give 7News a timeline when it comes to bringing relief to the North Miami neighborhood that is still dealing with flooded streets.

Crews rescue puppy from sewer line in Texas https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/crews-rescue-puppy-from-sewer-line-in-texas/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 14:44:03 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382479 SAN ANTONIO, Texas (WSVN) — A Texas puppy is now safe and sound after a harrowing ordeal in a sewer line in San Antonio.

The San Antonio Water System crew members, capturing the entire rescue on video, pulled little Pipa to safety.

Named after the pipe in Spanish, Pipa and her siblings were playing outside when they accidentally fell into a pipe near their front yard. While two siblings were quickly rescued, Pipa required more effort.

After an extensive rescue operation, San Antonio Animal Care Services took Pipa to a local vet for overnight observation before reuniting her with her owners.

Although initially named “Damsel,” based on her recovery, the owner may consider putting her up for adoption when she is older.

Cleanup efforts underway in Miami Beach after severe weather https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/cleanup-efforts-underway-in-miami-beach-after-severe-weather/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 18:16:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382091 Miami Beach residents and businesses are grappling with the aftermath of heavy rain as cleanup crews address the impact of severe weather.

On Meridian Avenue, off 12th Street, a fallen tree inflicted significant damage on a Nissan Xterra, with branches piercing through the windshield. Crews worked diligently Thursday morning to clear the massive branches obstructing the road.

“Somebody parked the car over there, but the big branches over there, they’ve fallen, so they destroyed the car, but we’re cutting, and we’re taking all the garbage,” said Luis Rodriguez, who was involved in the cleanup efforts.

A 7News viewer captured additional footage, providing a different perspective on the wreckage caused by the fallen tree.

Rodriguez mentioned that the removed branches were from a homeowner’s tree and are now being disposed of properly.

Those with jobs to do and places to be did not let the storm’s aftermath get in their way.

Area residents who spoke with 7News on Thursday afternoon said they’ve seen worse.

“I’ve lived here for what, seven, eight years now, so this is like Tuesday,” said Dwanh Pham.

“Yesterday was a little bit trying — it rained all day long — but no, I mean, the streets are clear now, and I took my children to school in the morning,” said Matthew Gultanoff with Better Streets Miami Beach. “I could see [crews] cleaning, and now, if you’d just woken up and slept all day yesterday, you barely would have known there was a storm here.”

At Brittany Bay Park, a tree was snapped in half. Down the street, boats were sitting on water that is way too high.

Some of the vessels were dirty, while others sustained damage.

“This one, not too much, but all the boats, like, you can see, the water was super high and almost all the boats have damage,” said a boater.

The greens at Miami Beach Golf Club were left a mess. Water was seen covering the course; crews were seen drying it out with a pump.

Española Way, meanwhile, faced inconveniences as smaller tree branches littered the streets, affecting local businesses. They needed to be taken piece by piece.

Chairs outside restaurants were seen knocked over.

Over at Miami Beach City Hall, the big Christmas tree was toppled and on its side, with some branches out of place. By late Thursday afternoon, the tree was uprighted and back in its designated spot.

“Overall, considering what we had last night, we fared pretty well here,” said Gultanoff.

No injuries have been reported in Miami Beach related to the storm, as the cleanup continues.

Family displaced after abandoned structure collapses, falls onto home in Miami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/family-displaced-after-abandoned-structure-collapses-falls-onto-home-in-miami/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 12:11:01 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381877 Miami Fire Rescue responded to a collapsed building in the area that displaced a family living nearby, Thursday morning.

The abandoned structure, located on Northwest 18th Avenue and Third Street, fell overnight onto an adjacent property, piercing the roof.

A family of three, along with their animals, living in the home next door are currently displaced as a result of the collapse.

Nicole Ojeda said the debris fell into her brother’s room as he was sleeping. She said it was absolutely terrifying and she had a million thoughts running through her mind.

“Yea, I was sleeping, then a loud noise, and when we go open the backroom, one of the bedrooms, the ceiling was caved in, any my younger brother was in there,” she said.

Ojeda said her father got them out of the house as the abandoned building next door continued to collapse on their home.

“It was all very shocking,” she said. “We got everyone out safe. We’ll deal with the property and items later.”

A neighbor also heard the collapse.

All of a sudden, after 3 a.m, we heard a big collapse, so my mother woke up, we woke up and we were just like, ‘What’s going,’ we looked outside and saw that the building was falling apart,” Elizabeth Silva said. “I was just shocked that this amount of rain, that the building would collapse that way.”

Officials said that the building was contracted to be demolished.

“It was under contract to be demolished, so we understand that the roof was initially removed, so that obviously made this very vulnerable to the weather conditions that we experienced last night,” said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatious Carroll.

Although officials said the building that collapsed was abandoned, they brought out a K-9 unit to ensure that a homeless person who frequented the area was not inside at the time of the implosion.

“So we see a shopping cart with items in it, as well as the bicycle that is probably used by that person, so those are indicators of concern,” Carroll said.

The first round of search reportedly did not find any people underneath the rubble, but as more of the debris gets removed, police said they used the K-9 unit to make sure no one was inside the abandoned house.

“This type of collapse is what you call a pancake collapse, which comes down right on top of each other, so it makes it very difficult for us to search without having to use heavy equipment to remove layers,” Carroll said.

Emergency crews are on the scene, cautiously removing the debris as they did find a propane tank under the structure.

Wednesday night’s storm proved to be a big mess for residents off Northwest Third Street.

“It did fall, and he was in it, but definitely wasn’t injured and he was able to walk out the debris.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

It’s going to take some time until the family is able to move back into their home.

7News was told that K-9 units did not find any people under the rubble. Officials believe that the homeless individual was not at the scene Wednesday night during the time of the storm.

South Florida residents battling with aftermath of relentless storm and widespread flooding https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/south-florida-residents-battling-with-aftermath-of-relentless-storm-and-widespread-flooding/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 11:36:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381830 South Florida faced a relentless storm, unleashing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and whipping winds throughout Wednesday. The aftermath reveals a region grappling with the impact of widespread flooding and record-breaking gusts.

The widespread flooding has left many cars stranded across Miami-Dade County and Broward County. The aftermath of Wednesday’s heavy rainfall has resulted in road closures and has led Broward County Public Schools and Broward College to cancel classes on Thursday.

A sinkhole opened at the intersection of Northwest 186th Street and 68th Avenue, leaving two cars submerged. Officials have not yet determined what led to the sinkhole, but the rain could be a factor.

Another disaster occurred for a family in Miami when an abandoned two-story building collapsed due to unfavorable conditions, Wednesday. A family is now displaced as a result of that incident.

Miami Beach experienced gusts reaching 74 miles per hour, indicative of the intensity of the storm. Rainfall totals across South Florida are substantial, with a notable peak of 9.57 inches in Coral Gables from Tuesday morning through Thursday.

Boarded sidewalks in a Miami neighborhood proved to be a nuisance as

Cellphone video and photos from 7News viewers showed several downed trees, damaging property and blocking roads, in numerous parts of Miami-Dade. In Aventura, strong winds left their mark, shaking palm trees and breaking branches, adding to the storm’s impact.

https://twitter.com/DCohenNEWS/status/1725077663524524087?s=20

As a result of the weather, several advisories remained in effect.

  • Street Flood Advisories: In effect for most of metro Miami-Dade and Broward through 6 a.m.
  • Flood Watch: In effect through 1 p.m.
  • Wind Advisory: Coastal and metro Miami-Dade and Broward through 7 p.m. for gusts up to 45 mph
  • Wind Advisory: Rest of Miami-Dade and Broward through 4 p.m. for gusts up to 45 mph
  • Storm Warning: Coastal Waters of East Coast

In addition to the sinkhole incident, higher-than-usual rainfall, combined with King Tides, is causing high water and ponding on some Broward County roadways. Live footage from Broward Boulevard and US-1 revealed a street light hanging precariously from its post, with police directing traffic due to outages in traffic lights.

In Davie, a lake has overflowed into Paradise Village, a mobile home community off State Road 84 near Flamingo Road where neighbors are just grateful the rain stopped before it worsened.

“I can’t go in, it’s very crazy. The lake is one thing,” said Noelia Laudin, a resident who attempted to drive through the area.

Laudin needed to drop of her son at a babysitter but couldn’t due to the flooded roadway.

A fountain marks the center of a lake at the front of the neighborhood. Where the lake ends is hard to tell because, after this week’s relentless rain, it has overflowed, sinking sidewalks, streets, and cars.

“We had to pull out at least 3 or 4 cars,” said Charles Aldorasi.

Workers in the community trying their best to help people in this soggy situation, towing people’s cars from the floodwater and directing traffic. Residents said the water could recede over the next few days.

Yellow caution tape marked the flooded roadway from the bank of the lake.

Fortunately, residents said, the rains stopped before it got into people’s homes.

“Because the house is very high, it’s a little high, but inside the house no,” said Doris Tovar, a resident.

Elsewhere in Davie, the water woes continued at a baseball field at the Bamford Sports Complex, where the outer edges of the field were underwater.

A Flash Flood Warning was in effect until 6:00 a.m., with specific areas like Edgewood, Tarpon, and Galt neighborhoods experiencing 8 to 10 inches of rain over the last 48 hours.

City response crews are actively engaged, with pumps deployed and operational in vulnerable neighborhoods like Edgewood and River Oaks to reduce water levels. Riverland Road has been cleared and is currently passable, but several roads in the Victoria Park area are still experiencing high water.

Over in Hollywood Beach, cleanup crews worked to reopen businesses after heavy winds impacted the Broadwalk.

Residents are urged to report impassable roads to the City’s Customer Service Center at 954-828-8000 or email lauderserv@fortlauderdale.gov.

The recent storm’s impact extends beyond flooded streets and sinkholes, reaching into air travel and power infrastructure. The flooding prompted a record 7.53 inches of rainfall at Miami International Airport on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, nine delays and one cancellation were reported at Miami International Airport (MIA), while at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), 10 delays and two cancellations were reported. Around 1 p.m., MIA was experiencing departure delays of only 30 to 44 minutes, with no delays. At FLL there were no delays or cancellations around 1 p.m.

Though the severe weather is dwindling, travelers are advised to check with their airlines before leaving home as a good practice.

The combination of strong winds and heavy rain has not only affected air travel but also knocked out power across various neighborhoods, creating a dramatic light show in some areas. A video captured along the 2400 block of Northwest Third Street in Miami showcases the intensity of the storm.

As of 3 p.m.,32,241 customers were without power in Miami-Dade County. In Broward County, 11,870 customers were without power. Anyone experiencing a power outage should call FPL directly at 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243).

While the worst of the rain has moved offshore, lingering light rain is expected throughout the morning. Cleanup efforts are to come once the rain subsides as debris litters the roads.

As South Florida copes with the aftermath, gradual improvements in weather conditions are anticipated, but the impact of this storm remains significant.

Residents are advised to stay off flooded roads unless necessary, never drive through high water, and turn around to avoid dangerous conditions.

International summit in Fort Lauderdale addresses alarming rise in antisemitism https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/international-summit-in-fort-lauderdale-addresses-alarming-rise-in-antisemitism/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 09:57:22 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381822 In a historic move, an international summit addressing antisemitism is taking place for the first time in the United States, right here in South Florida. As leaders gather to discuss this pressing issue, heartbreaking stories emerge from the recent Hamas attacks on Israel.

On Oct. 7, the world witnessed the terrifying moments as 239 hostages were kidnapped from Israel and taken to Gaza during what was supposed to be a music festival for peace. For Natalia Casarotti and Diego Engelbert, these are the moments that changed their lives forever.

“People cannot go to dance and be killed because they go to dance,” Casarotti said.

Casarotti’s son, Keshet, was missing for four and a half days after attending the Supernova Festival. The murder of her son, whose name means “rainbow” in English, has given her the strength to share his legacy.

“The day after the funeral of my son, I felt inside, kind of a commitment to tell the story to make something meaningful from this,” Casarotti continued.

Engelbert is still awaiting news about his sister Karina Engelbert, her husband Ronen Engel, and their two daughters, Mika and Yoval. These individuals were among the victims of Hamas terrorists who killed or kidnapped a significant portion of the population in Kibbutz Nir Oz.

“Now it’s my only mission to bring them home,” said Engelbert.

Both shared their stories at the Mayor’s Summit against Antisemitism in Fort Lauderdale. The summit, attended by mayors from South Florida, Cleveland, Providence, Rhode Island, and Richmond, Virginia, aims to address the alarming increase in antisemitic events globally.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, inspired by his attendance at the first in-person summit in Greece last December, emphasized the importance of spreading the message.

“I realized that what I learned there, I needed to bring that message here to Fort Lauderdale and to America,” he said at the summit.

Sacha Roytman, CEO of the Combat Antisemitism Movement, highlighted staggering statistics, citing a 500% rise in antisemitic events reported in the United States, 800% in the Netherlands, and 300% in Germany since the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel.

Engelbert focused on time as his sister battles recent recovery from breast cancer.

“I want my family back. That’s all we want,” he said.

As the summit continues, leaders aim to address the urgent need for international collaboration to combat the escalating threat of antisemitism. On Wednesday, organizers have a full day scheduled for the leaders attending the event. Additionally, the European Mayor’s Summit is scheduled for late November in Germany.

TikTok star Oliver James alleges discrimination after being escorted from Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/tiktok-star-oliver-james-alleges-discrimination-after-being-escorted-from-breakers-hotel-in-palm-beach/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 15:50:11 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381404 PALM BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Oliver James, a self-taught reader who gained online fame for his literacy journey, claimed he was at the center of controversy after a visit to The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach.

James, with over 270,000 online followers, was in town for the Barbara Bush Foundation’s Literacy Day event. He was invited to speak and read to children at the foundation’s annual literacy day event at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, with accommodations arranged at the Breakers Hotel.

On Monday morning, while conducting his routine of reading live on TikTok on the hotel grounds, James encountered a security guard who questioned him about a reported disturbance at the pool area.

“They asked me if I was by the pool area, and I was like, why are you asking me? That’s what I told them. And they were like, we got a disturbance from the pool area, saying that you were making a disturbance at the pool,” James shared in a TikTok live video.

Despite denying any involvement and not answering questions about his guest status or providing ID, staff called the Palm Beach Police, who escorted James to his room to pack his belongings.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it. 100%. Why would you walk directly up to me? There’s a thousand people in this whole entire place,” said James.

The Breakers Hotel denied any discrimination allegations, stating that the guest refused to comply, leading to the decision to ask him to leave.

Reckless crime spree ends in high-speed crash for Florida felons https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/reckless-crime-spree-ends-in-high-speed-crash-for-florida-felons/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 14:22:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381354 LAKELAND, Fla. (WSVN) — Startling surveillance footage captures a Florida man, Timothy Hogue, engaging in a car crime spree at a breakneck speed of 80 miles per hour in a Lakeland residential neighborhood. The spree culminated in a head-on collision with a parked car, fortunately causing no injuries.

Hogue and his alleged accomplice, Rebecca Kozub, were apprehended by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office after a 911 call reported their early Monday morning escapades of breaking into cars and theft.

Hogue, boasting a criminal record spanning over 15 years, now faces a litany of charges, including resisting an officer, burglary, possession of meth, and petty theft. This arrest adds to his staggering tally of 31 criminal felonies, encompassing armed burglaries, grand theft, identity theft, and drug possession.

Kozub, implicated as Hogue’s partner in crime, carries her own history with 19 felonies, including charges of grand theft.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the potential harm these individuals could have caused, underscoring the urgency of legal consequences.

Brian Bruchey of the Sheriff’s Office states, “It could have been much worse. These are two individuals who have quite a lengthy criminal history. We’re hoping they get put in prison and stay there a while.”

The Florida State Attorney’s Office is actively prioritizing public safety enhancements to prevent the easy release of repeat felons like Hogue and Kozub.

Father of group home abuse victim sues staffing company involved with hiring caregivers https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/father-of-group-home-abuse-victim-sues-staffing-company-involved-with-hiring-caregivers/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 17:41:07 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380909 Edward Taylor, the father of abuse victim Edward Ware, has called for a news conference to shed light on a tragic incident that claimed his son’s life and although three people have been charged in this incident, Taylor said it isn’t enough.

The event started on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at 1370 NE 138th Street, North Miami, where Taylor’s attorney announced that he is going to sue the caregivers and the company that hired them. Taylor also called for stricter laws when it comes to protecting disabled citizens.

Ware, an autistic adult reliant on Care Assist Home Care Inc. for support at the Family Tree Concept group home, tragically lost his life on December 21, 2021.

Surveillance footage captured the horrifying moment when three caregivers physically restrained Ware, leading to his suffocation and death.

Taylor entrusted Care Assist Home Care Inc. with his son’s well-being, expecting safe living conditions and proper care for his medical and behavioral needs. Instead, the unimaginable occurred.

Driven by the need for justice and to bring attention to the vulnerability of individuals in group homes, Taylor addressed the media during the news conference.

“At the time of his murder, I was on speakerphone, talking to my son,” he said. “The last memory I have of him is hearing the caretakers wrestle him to the floor and hearing take his last breath.

The Haggard Law Firm, represented by lawyers Michael Haggard and Kimberly Wald, has filed a lawsuit in pursuit of justice for this wrongful death case.

“He trusted them to provide staffing to protect his son, to keep his son safe and instead, they killed his son,” said Wald. “… What happened here was murder, there is no other way to put it.”

Among other things, the lawsuit alleges the company that hired the people in this video didn’t provide them with the proper training or supervision that could have prevented the death of the 36-year-old.

“The group home staff appeared to have little training on how to deal with problems relating to mental illnesses or training on to restrain a person, without injuring them or killing them,” said Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

Three people who worked for the Family Tree Concept Group Home were arrested and charged with manslaughter. Now they, and the company that hired them, Care Assist Home Care are all named in a wrongful death lawsuit.

“We’re here to bring a message to the South Florida community that there is a serious unregulated problem with group homes in our area,” said Michael Haggard, lawyer at the Haggard Law Firm.

“He was the light of my life and love,” said Taylor. “There has not been a day that I have not mourned for my son.”

WSVN has contacted the attorney for the staffing company named in the lawsuit for comment but has not responded.

AutoNation Mobility launches micro leasing program in Florida https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/autonation-mobility-launches-micro-leasing-program-in-florida/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 14:23:25 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380896 Get ready for a revolution in car ownership! AutoNation Mobility has unveiled a new program called micro leasing, offering shorter-term vehicle access, perfect for those wanting to try before they buy or seeking a ride for a specific season.

“It’s a new way for consumers to access a vehicle for a shorter period of time,” explains Ivan Mihov, VP of AutoNation Mobility.

The program offers access to cars significantly shorter than the average three to four year lease.

“We have over 300 dealerships and we can offer just an unparalleled selection for this short duration of six to 12 months, no one else is really offering this,” said Mihov.

Mihov explained that this program is ideal for car enthusiasts, relocators, and those wanting the latest model. Micro leasing includes maintenance and roadside assistance. At the end of the lease, customers have the option to extend or buy the car.

“We’ve seen car enthusiasts that want to get that M4 and it’s a splurge for them but it’s an experience for them and they’re willing to do it for a year because it’s much more affordable than buying it,” Mihov said.

The entire process is digital, allowing users to browse available cars, configure payments, and complete the leasing process online.

“Everything happens online, so it’s a fully digital process,” says Mihov. “You don’t have to go into the dealership, all the pricing is fully transparent, you don’t need to negotiate.”

Once a customer finds a car they like, they can configure what payment they want, select the length of your lease and amount of miles.

“Obviously, you’ve got the pictures of the car and this is the specific car,” said Mihov. “One of the things we do is we pick the exact cars that are on the lot. Only cars that are available are on the website.”

Then customers go through a credit process, but the entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. As soon as 24 hours later, participant can go on in to pick up the keys.

Currently available in South Florida and Southern California, the service aims to roll out nationwide soon.

Massive dust devil strikes Florida work site https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/massive-dust-devil-strikes-florida-work-site/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 13:40:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380894 NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WSVN) — A colossal dust devil, a rare and terrifying sight, unexpectedly emerged at a Florida work site last week, caught on video by Kenneth Meeks in New Port Richey.

Dust devils, short-lived and less intense tornadoes, form when the sun heats the ground during late morning or early afternoon hours.

Meeks’ footage captured the swirling phenomenon, caused by light desert breezes, with wind speeds less than 70 mph.

Dust devils are generally harmless, not associated with thunderstorms or clouds, making them a fascinating yet typically weak natural occurrence.

Roads back open after main break floods A1A in Hollywood, causing water boil advisory https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/main-break-floods-a1a-in-hollywood-causes-road-closure-water-boil-advisory/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 13:02:14 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380875 A Hollywood road has reopened on Tuesday night after a water main break near Sheridan Street has led to significant flooding on A1A, causing traffic disruptions and a precautionary water boil in the area.

Live video footage captured cars cautiously navigating through the flooded road while public utility workers strive to repair the leak.

7Skyforce’s aerial views showcase water spewing from the ground, with utility workers using metal detectors to locate and shut off the valve.

A woman who lived in the area said she noticed the disruption around 5 a.m. just before she had to get ready for work.

“My husband noticed there was water on the street,” she said. “He came in and got me to look at it. We thought maybe it was king tides or the rain from last night. I went back inside, turned the water on, noticed we didn’t have any water pressure, so then I said, ‘This is not king tide, this is a main break.’ So we called the police non-emergency and they sent out fire rescue to check on it.”

As of 9 a.m., workers were in the process of making repairs to a 12-inch water main.

Officials have issued a precautionary boil water advisory for utility customers along A1A from Sheridan Street to Port Everglades.

In response to the incident, northbound lanes of A1A between New Mexico Street and Sheridan Street are temporarily closed for repairs.

Drivers are reminded that attempting to navigate flooded streets can result in damage and getting stuck.

Please check back on WSVN.com and 7News for more details on this developing story.

Florida mother demands police action over alleged explicit school library book https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/florida-mother-demands-police-action-over-alleged-explicit-school-library-book/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 14:15:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380514 SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — A concerned mother demanded police intervention after she found an allegedly explicit book in her child’s school library.

Jennifer Tapley reported to the sheriff’s office, citing the book “Storm and Fury” as child pornography, seeking enforcement against its distribution in the school.

“The governor says, this is child pornography,” said Tapley on a depity’s bodycam footage. “It’s a serious crime — it’s just as serious as if I handed a Playboy to her right now. Right here in front of you. It’s just as serious, according to the law.”

Despite Tapley’s concerns, the school district asserts compliance with state law, stating no crime has occurred.

Outside of the school, deputies spoke among themselves, stating that this incident isn’t “their thing” and that this matter belongs to the school district.

The sheriff’s office said they don’t have grounds for an investigation. It’s worth noting that Tapley is currently running for a school board seat.

‘It was the scariest moment of my life:’ Deputy speaks out after driver intentionally rams into him, corporal https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/it-was-the-scariest-moment-of-my-life-deputy-speaks-out-after-driver-intentionally-rams-into-him-corporal/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 11:47:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380455 TAMPA, Fla. (WSVN) — Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy Manuel Santos narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation, recounting the ordeal that unfolded during a routine response to a mental health call near Tampa.

“It was the scariest moment of my life, I will tell you that much right now,” said Deputy Santos, holding back tears as he described the terrifying moment when a speeding vehicle rammed into him and Corporal Carlos Brito. “He comes back, we see the car. Immediately I try to push corporal out of the way from what I’ve been told, I didn’t even know I did this. I pushed him out of the way, I pushed myself out of the way, and when I fell on the ground I made sure I wasn’t bleeding.”

Deputy Santos, released from Tampa General Hospital on Saturday, faces a challenging recovery journey.

“I’ve got some ligament damage, tendon damage,” he said. “I’m going to have to go through reconstructive surgery for my knee, my tibia, fibia — that’s all destroyed.”

His partner, Corporal Brito, endured severe injuries and, in the immediate aftermath of the crash, believed he might not survive.

“Corporal Brito thought he was dying, so he wanted to say goodbye to his wife, so he used his radio to say goodbye to his wife,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

Surgeons are working diligently to salvage the lower part of Brito’s left leg. Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office provided a positive update on Corporal Brito’s condition, stating he is in great spirits, and medical staff are actively working towards a full recovery.

Deputy Santos, preparing for surgery next week, expressed optimism for his partner’s recovery.

“My hope is that he keeps his body the way it is and he comes out walking, and we get back to the next shift,” he said.

The suspect responsible for the ambush is now facing three counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported that the suspect has displayed violent behavior in jail and attempted to harm deputies.

Parkland parent files human rights lawsuit against U.S. over gun policies https://wsvn.com/news/us-world/parkland-parent-files-human-rights-lawsuit-against-u-s-over-gun-policies/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 13:00:04 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379752 A grieving parent from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre, Manuel Oliver, is taking legal action against the United States, alleging that the country’s gun policy violates basic human rights.

“My son was shot 280,000 victims ago, so this is happening really often, we had a mass shooting a couple of weeks ago and we don’t see anyone offended about this,” he said in a past interview. “So sometimes you have to take things by your own hand.”

Oliver, whose son Joaquin was a victim of the 2018 tragedy, claims that lax gun control allows firearms to fall into the wrong hands, posing a threat to citizens.

In the lawsuit, Manuel and Patricia Oliver argue that the U.S. has not implemented widely accepted measures to protect its citizens from the ongoing threat of gun violence. The couple is currently on a nationwide tour, “Guac’s Magical Tour,” visiting 23 states as they commemorate what would have been Joaquin’s 23rd birthday.

The tour serves as a platform for survivors and victims of gun violence to unite and advocate for change.

Manuel and Patricia became prominent activists for gun reform after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre, where 17 students and staff lost their lives, and 17 others were injured.

First responders conduct realistic drill for potential train emergency https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/first-responders-conduct-realistic-drill-for-potential-train-emergency/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 12:25:58 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379737 Multiple fire rescue agencies participated in a training exercise on Thursday morning at the Tri-Rail train tracks. The simulation, designed to prepare crews for a worst-case scenario.

During the exercise, responders faced a challenging scenario: a train versus vehicle collision, leading to a trapped patient and a simulated fire on the train.

“This was a train versus vehicle, and what we simulated was there was a trapped patient in the vehicle and also we had the train simulated that it caught fire, creating smoke and hazardous situation for the passengers on board,” explained Fire Rescue Training Chief Don Desmond. “Therefore, we had to extinguish the fire, extricate the victim from the vehicle, and also set crews for interior passengers that had smoke inside the rail cars.”

The drill included extinguishing the fire, extricating the victim, and dealing with smoke-filled rail cars where actors played the roles of passengers.

The realistic simulation aimed to enhance coordination among agencies, providing valuable insights on handling emergencies effectively. Firefighters engaged in the exercise to assist Tri-Rail in refining their response to potential mass casualty incidents.

Chief Desmond spoke about the importance of such drills.

“This situation is very realistic, and numerous agencies will inevitably have to work together. Training for these scenarios helps us overcome hardships in collaboration and ensures that different units can work together seamlessly during large-scale incidents,” he said.

This comprehensive drill not only addressed the challenges of extinguishing fires and rescuing trapped victims but also focused on collaboration among various agencies. The goal was to minimize the severity of situations and streamline communication between responders.

“Having all units from different agencies working together, usually presents a hardship sometimes, and so by training for this helps us to be able to come together and somewhat work on the same page and get everything accomplished as needed,” said Chief Desmond.

Chief Desmond added that the program takes months to complete, including meetings, planning, training and coordinating around everyone’s schedule.

‘She was huge’: Python hunters wrestle 17-foot snake in Florida Everglades https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/she-was-huge-python-hunters-wrestle-17-foot-snake-in-florida-everglades/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 14:59:18 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379011 FLORIDA EVERGLADES (WSVN) — A group of python hunters found themselves in an epic battle against a colossal 17-foot snake, a showdown that will be etched in their memories forever.

Mike Elfenbein, accompanied by his 17-year-old son Cole, embarked on a python hunting trip they won’t soon forget.

“I think he’s still on cloud nine,” said Elfenbein about his son. “You’ll go 10 times and not catch anything and go one time and everything changes.”

Their encounter with the massive snake unfolded in Big Cypress National Preserve on Friday. What they thought was an alligator turned out to be a monstrous python, and the situation escalated when a stranger in another pickup truck attempted to grab the snake, only to be dragged toward a canal. The struggle to subdue the massive serpent ensued.

“That was when I realized it was either we do something now or this wasn’t going to end good,” Elfenbein recounted. “So I grabbed her by the head and my son had her by the tail. We stretched her out across the road and Carter, Holden, and Tray jumped on top of her to try to hold her down. She literally lifted us up the ground.”

It took the combined efforts of five individuals a grueling 45 minutes to wrestle the snake and three hours to get it safely into a truck.

The massive python, weighing a staggering 198 pounds and measuring 17 feet, two inches in length with a 23-inch girth, ranks as the second heaviest python ever found in Florida.

“There was deer hooves and deer bones inside of her,” Elfenbein. “I think the experts suggested that those hooves and bones have probably been there for two months. Of her 198 pounds, 29 pounds of it was pure fat. She was just massive, she was huge”

This jaw-dropping encounter strengthens Elfenbein’s belief in the importance of converting the area into a federally protected “wilderness designation” to curb the impact of these non-native predators on the ecosystem.

“It’s crazy to me, it’s counter intuitive and contradictory to the nature of conservation to propose restrictions that would prohibit the agencies and the public from being able to access places and provide the management and resources that we need to protect our wildlife.”

While Elfenbein is willing to share pictures of the incredible ordeal, he’s keeping the video of the snake takedown private, humorously noting, “There’s a lot of four-letter words in there.”

The snake in this encounter was only 17 pounds lighter than the heaviest python.

Elfenbein is planning on talking about his encounter during his trip in Washington D.C. where he will be speaking on behalf of the Izaak Walton League of America to talk about protecting the Everglades.

Family’s plea for justice 1 year after shooter claims life of loved one https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/familys-plea-for-justice-1-year-after-shooter-claims-life-of-loved-one/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 17:42:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378679 After one year of a tragic loss for a family, they are making a plea to the public in hopes to find the shooter who killed their loved one.

It’s been one year since the tragic death of Gregory Denard Shaw, and on Tuesday, Miami-Dade Police, in collaboration with Shaw’s grieving family, are making a heartfelt plea for justice.

“On that day a year ago, I not only lost my husband — my best friend — but this family lost a father, a grandfather,” said Donna Shaw.

A wife’s agony and pain remains constant one year later after her husband was shot and killed outside of a Burger King, located at 13705 NW 27th Ave. on Nov. 7, 2022. When Opa-locka Police arrived at the scene, they found his body inside of a crashed vehicle.

“Oh God, help me,” Donna said, holding back tears. “I’m just asking, if you know anything, if you could please help this hole in my heart to close.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed Shaw’s passing at the scene and the case was taken over by Miami-Dade Police.

“He was a good man, he was just going to get food and he was killed,” explained Donna.

Investigators said Gregory was just leaving the fast food chain when he was shot.

“Without provocation, the suspect produced the firearm and shot the victim multiple times and then fled northbound on Northwest 27th Avenue,” said Miami-Dade Police Department Detective Oscar Andino.

As the one-year mark passes, the family, police, and the community unite to remember Shaw and seek answers.

“You might say it has nothing to do with me, but it does,” expressed Natacha West, the family’s pastor, “because when one person hurts, we all hurt. This is a community issue. The longer the subject stays out, there’s a great probability that somebody else will be hurt.”

A family desperate for closure coming together and begging for the community’s help.

“We are suffering from not knowing who or why they did this and I ask that you please find it in your hearts to call them. The number, you can remain anonymous, don’t have to know who you are.”

If you have any information on this crime, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Good Samaritan prevents carjacking in Ocala Starbucks drive-thru https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/good-samaritan-prevents-carjacking-in-ocala-starbucks-drive-thru/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 13:47:28 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378627 OCALA, Fla. (WSVN) — A woman’s ordinary morning coffee run in Ocala turned into a heart-pounding encounter when she was nearly carjacked while waiting in a Starbucks drive-thru. Thanks to a quick-thinking Good Samaritan, what could have ended much worse was thwarted.

As Shane Spicer waited for his coffee police were in pursuit of a dangerous suspect, identified as Michael Prouty, who was wanted for breaking into someone’s home and stealing their car.

Prouty’s reckless high-speed chase came to a dramatic halt when he crashed at a busy intersection and attempted to flee on foot.

“A white male bailing. He’s now at Starbucks,” said one police officer.

Sprinting toward Starbucks, Spicer witnessed Prouty trying to carjack a woman, taking quick and instinctive action to intervene. Police dashcam footage captured the intense moment as Spicer, an Army veteran, jumped into the passenger seat to prevent Prouty from escaping.

“I’m going to get you, buddy. You’re not going anywhere now. You crossed the line,” Spicer recalled his determination to stop the suspect.

Bodycam video shows Spicer holding onto the suspect while officers arrived to make the arrest. While several people were injured in the crash, Spicer emerged from the takedown just a little out of breath.

“I feel like if you’ve got the ability to watch out for someone, that you should. I would just hope that someone would do the same for my family,” said Spicer.

The pregnant woman who was almost carjacked is expected to be OK, and shortly after the incident, she reached out to thank Spicer.

Election Day in Miami-Dade: Races to watch and candidates on the ballot https://wsvn.com/news/politics/election-day-in-miami-dade-races-to-watch-and-candidates-on-the-ballot/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 11:56:13 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378537 It’s Election Day in several Miami-Dade cities, with critical races and candidates making headlines.

One of the most closely monitored contests is for the City of Miami Commission District 1 seat, which has garnered attention due to its former occupant, Alex Díaz de la Portilla, who is facing corruption charges, including money laundering and bribery, related to campaign payments.

Díaz de la Portilla’s arrest and suspension by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis left his seat vacant. Now, four candidates, including Miguel Angel Gabela, Francisco “Frank” Pichel, Mercedes “Merci” Rodriguez, and Marvin Tapia, are vying for Díaz de la Portilla’s role.

Despite facing criminal charges, Díaz de la Portilla has maintained his innocence, claiming that the accusations are politically motivated.

“this is a work of fiction,” said Díaz de la Portilla after he bonded out on Sept. 14. “I’ll repeat it again: This is a work of fiction by democrat state attorney targeting a republican city commissioner. Period.”

In Miami’s District 4, incumbent Manolo Reyes, who recently revealed he is undergoing treatment for leukemia, faces a challenge from Andres Vallina.

Meanwhile, Miami Beach is gearing up for the first mayoral election in six years, as current mayor Dan Gelber has reached his term limit. The candidates for Miami Beach mayor include Michael Gongora, Mike Grieco, Commissioner Steven Meiner, and Bill Roedy.

In Surfside, where several heated commission meetings have occurred, voters will decide whether to extend term lengths for commissioners, the mayor, and vice mayor, and stagger the years each seat is voted on rather than all at once.

Homestead residents will be selecting candidates for four City Council seats.

In the special election for Seat 1 (Northwest District) voters have three choices: Thomas B. Davis, Amy Spadaro, and James Wyatt. This special election aims to fill the seat vacated by Vice Mayor Julio Guzman, who ran for mayor and lost to incumbent Steve Losner last month. The candidate with the most votes in the Seat 1 race wins.

In Seat 2 (Keys Gate), incumbent Sean L. Fletcher faces challenger Ana San Roman. Seat 3 (Villages) sees incumbent Larry Roth up against William R. Rea. Lastly, in Seat 6 (Oasis), Clemente Canabal and Toshiba Mitchell vie for this seat.

In Hialeah, four candidates are competing for two City Council seats. In Group 1, voters must choose between incumbent Monica Nicole Perez and Elias D. Montes de Oca. In Group 6, incumbent Vivian Casáls-Muñoz and Angelica Pacheco vie for support.

These elections in Homestead and Hialeah are pivotal moments for these cities, with voters making choices that will shape their local leadership.

Voters across Miami-Dade have the opportunity to make their voices heard on critical issues, and each vote will shape the future of their respective communities. If needed, a runoff election for the Miami City Commission race is scheduled for Nov. 21.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m, and vote-by-mail ballots must be received by the Elections Department by 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Youth soccer game interrupted by gunfire in police confrontation https://wsvn.com/news/local/florida/youth-soccer-game-interrupted-by-gunfire-in-police-confrontation/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 16:47:37 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378295 NOCATEE, Fla. (WSVN) — A youth soccer game was abruptly disrupted as gunfire erupted during a police confrontation with a burglary suspect, leaving parents and children traumatized.

Karl Johnston was watching his 9-year-old daughter play soccer at Davis Park when an unexpected incident unfolded. A man ran by, shooting at deputies, who responded by firing back.

“He came running right by us,” recalled Johnston. “We were probably about 15 yards away from the shooter when he came down running.”

The chaotic scene sent shockwaves through the community.

“Everyone panicked, and got all of the kids on the ground, moving away from the shooter,” recounted Johnston. “The shooter went further down, and several cops were chasing him, firing. All of the kids were traumatized, screaming, crying. Parents crying. Unbelievable in this area.”

One parent described how they huddled in their car with their family for at least 45 minutes, waiting for the all-clear signal from deputies.

“We heard two or three shots, and then just kind of stopped,” said Aaron Farrar. “We looked at each other and then maybe 10 seconds later, there was another pretty significant volley of gun shots. Maybe 10 or 12. It seemed like. At that point, we all got the kids and headed to the cars.

According to deputies, the incident started as a burglary, and the suspect later succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
