At eight weeks old, the adorable cub underwent her first physical examination, conducted by dedicated zoo staff.

Born in September, she initially remained secluded in her den with her mother for crucial bonding time. Zookeepers closely monitored her through closed-circuit cameras during this period.

The Sumatran tiger, a critically endangered species with less than 500 believed to remain in the wild, adds to the zoo’s commitment to conservation efforts.

Early Black Friday shopping sets tone for busy holiday weekend https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/early-black-friday-shopping-sets-tone-for-busy-holiday-weekend/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 10:48:55 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384569 In the midst of a bustling five-day holiday shopping weekend, eager shoppers kicked off their spree on Thursday night, fueled by the joys of a Thanksgiving feast.

“After they finished eating, they come over to that food off!” shared one shopper.

With a number of items on their shopping lists, ranging from electric toothbrushes to air fryers and TVs, shoppers were united by one common thread—the holiday deals.

“I’m trying to get an electric toothbrush,” said one shopper.

“For spoons. An air fryer. We also bought a TV,” said another shopper.

However, regardless of the items on their lists, the real draw for consumers, according to the National Retail Federation, lies in the unbeatable deals and a sense of tradition.

“It makes me feel fantastic. I know the deals are good, and I look forward to it,” shared a satisfied shopper.

As shoppers readied themselves to spend, expectations loomed for a record-breaking holiday season.

While some left with their sought-after big-ticket items, others took their time to ponder and test products before committing.

Many left with full carts, but above all, full hearts, having spent quality time with family during the Thanksgiving holiday.

North Lauderdale residents cheer as gas drops to 32 cents https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/north-lauderdale-residents-cheer-as-gas-drops-to-32-cents/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 10:36:35 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1384566 A programming error at a Marathon gas station in North Lauderdale left drivers with an unexpected and wallet-friendly surprise.

The mistake occurred on West McNab Road.

Instead of the intended price of $3.29 per gallon, the pump was mistakenly set at a mere 32 cents per gallon.

Thrifty drivers quickly seized the opportunity, with one fortunate individual filling up with over 17 gallons for less than six dollars.

Word of the pricing glitch spread, leading to a lineup of eager drivers circling the station in hopes of capitalizing on the temporary bargain.

However, the joy was short-lived, as the gas station promptly rectified the mistake. The pricing has now been fixed.

The last time gas was priced at 32 cents per gallon dates back to the year 1964.

Runoff looms for Miami Beach mayoral seat amid controversy https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/runoff-looms-for-miami-beach-mayoral-seat-amid-controversy/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 17:29:17 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383781 After two Miami Beach mayoral candidates failed to secure the necessary threshold for the city’s top job, Tuesday’s decisive runoff election will determine the winner.

Former Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora aims to re-enter local government, while Miami Beach Commissioner Steven Meiner seeks to ascend to the mayoral role.

“I’ve been so focused on residents’ quality of life, law, and order being number one,” Meiner said.

“I wanna re-brand our city as one of arts and culture; I wanna make sure we have the police presence we need,” Gongora said.

The vacancy arose when current mayor Dan Gelber reached his term limit.

In the Nov. 7 election, only 242 votes separated the two candidates, each with multiple endorsements.

Recently, Meiner lost the endorsement of the Miami Herald, withdrawing support due to allegations of unwanted advances reported by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The advancements, according to the Herald, include that he “…allegedly tried to kiss a college-age SEC intern when they went out for dinner,” while another intern claimed, “…while she was at the SEC during law school about a decade ago, Meiner frequently texted her and made comments she saw as inappropriate.”

Meiner, responding to the allegations while campaigning at City Hall on Tuesday, stated, “No. No. No, but I’ve said that publicly, and it’s unfortunate that that’s what we’re dealing with.”

The Miami Herald also withdrew support for Gongora, citing incidents that “paint the picture of someone who seems willing to use his position in ways that harm public trust.”

According to the Herald, Gongora presented official city proclamations at private events, potentially giving the impression of city hall endorsement.

“You know, there are no rules about presenting these types of things,” Gongora said Tuesday. “We thought we were doing a nice thing by honoring businesses and people, but since I have a good record as an elected commissioner, people look for anything they can to try and attack you.”

Despite their differences, both candidates share a common focus on public safety.

“I’m ready to make sure we have more police out in the streets,” said Gongora.

“It’s not only police visibility, which is a big part of it, but it is making sure we prosecute our crimes,” Meiner said.

Polls close at 7 p.m.

Two arrested in connection to shooting of MDPD officer in Miami Gardens https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/two-arrested-in-connection-to-shooting-of-mdpd-officer-in-miami-gardens/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 14:53:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383747 Two men have been arrested and charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer in connection with Monday’s shooting that grazed a Miami-Dade Police detective.

The suspects, 19-year-old Travis Arratin Fernandez and 19-year-old Drequan Humes, were booked into Miami-Dade jail Tuesday morning with no bond.

https://twitter.com/fox_sheldon/status/1726973952671826081?s=20

The incident unfolded just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the area of NW 154th Street and 19th Avenue, where the officers were investigating another case.

The officer was in an unmarked red pickup truck surveilling the suspects in a group of men with guns outside a home. The officers approached and that’s when the men started shooting.

The bullet, bouncing off the officer’s bullet-proof vest, grazed him in the cheek.

“We’re just grateful he was wearing his vest and it helped protect his life,” said MDPD Director Stephanie Daniels.

Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene, prompting an extensive investigation by law enforcement.

In surveillance footage obtained by 7News, the sound of gunshots could be heard. Moments later, in another video, two men could be seen jumping a neighboring fence with a third man running towards the front door of a home.

Several seconds later, an officer could be seen on video searching for the suspects.

Hours after the search for the suspects began, surveillance video showed four men coming out of a home with their hands in the air after the Miami-Dade Special Response Team arrived at the scene.

At least five people were initially detained, including Fernandez and Humes.

The injured officer, who had been transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, was discharged Monday night after receiving medical attention.

Humes has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The officer who was shot was treated at the hospital and was released on Monday.

If you have any information on this crime, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

“We were lucky enough to be in a program that changed our lives,” said one band member. “I grew up in New York and I never thought I’d be able to have an opportunity like this and I think this is really cool and we’re lucky enough to be in this amazing program to have so many new opportunities.”

The excitement among the students is evident as they embark on this prestigious opportunity, marking a significant milestone for Broward County.

“We got a huge fan base that’s coming with us, traveling with us to New York and everybody is just absolutely excited,” said Rivero.

The Eagle Regiment was selected from more than 100 applicants.

Experts urge planning ahead amid record Thanksgiving rush https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/experts-urge-planning-ahead-amid-record-thanksgiving-rush/ Mon, 20 Nov 2023 17:17:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383431 A bustling Miami International Airport Monday morning marked the start of the holiday travel rush as families made their way to reunite for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Amid the excitement for festive gatherings, travelers remain vigilant for potential disruptions.

“The plane was broken. I had to stay in a hotel overnight, me and my wife. Today’s her birthday a matter of fact,” said one traveler. “But we gotta catch this plane.”

The number of people traveling 50 miles or more from home for Thanksgiving is expected to reach 55.4 million this week, a slight increase over last year, according to AAA projections.

“We’re projecting this to be the third highest Thanksgiving forecast that we’ve looked at, and we’ve been looking at holiday travel since 2000,” said AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz.

The majority of travelers, nearly 89%, are opting for road trips, taking advantage of a bit of relief at the pump.

GasBuddy.com reports the national average for a gallon as just under $3.28, marking a significant drop of 39.5 cents from the previous year.

About 4.7 million people are expected to fly during the Thanksgiving travel period, according to AAA. That’s an increase of 6.6% compared to 2022 and the highest number since 2005.

“It’s busier than I expected so as long as we get there safe, it’s fine,” said a traveler named Mike.

Lines moved a bit fast but what would slow them down were travelers who brought items that we’re not allowed, like a loaded gun.

On Monday, TSA confiscated a Smith and Wesson gun, along with 23 rounds of ammo.

Traffic is anticipated to peak on Wednesday, with close to 50,000 flights scheduled.

“So far it’s typical Miami it took us about an hour to get here from home and thank god we found some good parking in the parking garage and everything else seems to be flowing pretty good, so we’re just excited to sit down on the plane and get to our destination,” said a traveler named Jaccardi.

Despite efforts to streamline security processes, the TSA is aware of any and all potential delays.

“We will do our best to screen standard passengers in under 30 minutes and passengers enrolled in TSA pre-check in under 10 minutes,” said TSA Federal Security Director Robert Spinden. “There might be occasions where wait times may be longer.”

Regardless of the mode of travel, millions will have to deal with adverse weather conditions in the coming days.

“If your flight gets canceled or significantly delayed for any reason, I want the traveling public to know that you are entitled to a full cash refund if you choose to take that refund rather than rebook,” said Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving is expected to be the busiest with an estimated 2.9 million passengers taking to the skies.

One United Airlines representative recommened travelers to download their app to stay up to date with their flight statuses.

“So let’s say there is a delay, there is a cancellation. One thing we have at United is we’re able to communicate with you automatically so we’ll be able to rebook your flight and you can look in the app to see if that option works for you,” said Katie Carrier from United Airlines.

AAA recommends Wednesday morning and Sunday morning as the optimal times for travel.

MIA just opened a new economy park and ride lot at 1350 NW 45th Avenue.

There are 460 spaces with a shuttle service to the terminal every 15 minutes for just $12 a day, about half the price of the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.

Family of man killed in Walmart shooting files negligent security lawsuit https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/family-of-man-killed-in-walmart-shooting-files-negligent-security-lawsuit/ Mon, 20 Nov 2023 10:41:24 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1383313 The family of a man fatally shot while intervening in a Walmart assault have filed a negligent security wrongful death lawsuit against the retail giant, urging increased safety measures during the holiday shopping season.

Forty-two-year-old Thierry Bastien, described as a hero by his girlfriend Makia Ford, was killed when he intervened to protect a Walmart employee from an off-duty worker, 22-year-old Tironie Sterling, who was assaulting her.

Monday morning, Bastien’s family returned to the Walmart to officially announce the lawsuit.

“It was traumatizing, still traumatizing,” said Ford on Monday.

Investigators said Sterling shot Bastien multiple times that day.

Sterling fled the store, but was arrested hours later, investigators said.

Speaking with 7News the day after the shooting, Ford recounted how Bastien tried to stop the attack, describing him as a good man who loved his family.

“The guy had threw the girlfriend on the floor, and he started pounding on the girl, so he ran off to go help the girl,” Ford said, “but as he was running off, I pulled him back and I told him, ‘Don’t go,’ and he turned around at me and said, ‘I’m just going to go help.’”

Family members said Bastien had dreams of opening his own restaurant. He left behind two children, one of whom was just four months old at the time of the fatal shooting.

“He was taken to the ground in front as Makia [Ford] and other customers screamed and screamed for several minutes,” said family attorney Michael Haggard. “This shooter took out the gun and shot him [Bastien] six times.”

“My son will never ever see his dad,” said Ford on Monday. “He’ll never know who his dad is. Thank God for the videos that we have [that] we took that I can show him.”

Recent data from the Gun Violence Archive revealed statistics about gun incidents and deaths at major retailers.

Walmart released a statement that reads as follows, “We’re heartbroken over the incident that happened at the Lauderdale Lakes store in May and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.”

Between January 1, 2020, and November 22, 2022, Walmart experienced 363 gun incidents resulting in 112 deaths. Comparatively, Kroger had 45 gun incidents with 20 gun deaths, and Food Lion reported 32 gun incidents with 21 gun deaths during the same period.

Suspect in shooting of South Beach security guard captured in Texas with help from surveillance video https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/suspect-in-shooting-of-south-beach-security-guard-captured-in-texas-with-help-from-surveillance-video/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 23:36:32 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382664 A suspect linked to the attempted murder of a Miami Beach security guard has been apprehended in Texas and returned to face charges in Miami-Dade County.

Surveillance footage from Oct. 22, obtained by 7News, captured the crucial audio of gunshots targeted at the victim along the 900 block of Collins Avenue.

Miami Beach detectives utilized the footage by Sherbrooke Hotel owner Mitch Novick to identify Dontayvious Roberts, linking him to the incident.

Speaking with 7News on Friday, Novick said he was jolted out of bed by the sound of the gunshots.

“I heard the gunfire, I woke up, I took note of the time,” he said.

What Novick heard was the moment the security guard came under fire just up the street.

Detectives said surveillance stills captured the beginning of the crime. They said the suspect was seen running toward the victim while he went for a gun in his waistband before shots were fired.

The arrest warrant states Roberts had parked his car nearby and was told he couldn’t and that the vehicle would be towed.

Police said Roberts didn’t like that, so he pulled out the firearm and opened fire.

Luckily, the report states, the bullets “grazed the victim, clothing, entering his security labeled polo shirt but not striking his body.”

Investigators said Roberts fled the scene on foot.

Novick’s footage showed a man believed to be Roberts walking south and then west toward Washington Avenue.

“The police contacted me. They came here four or five times regarding this incident,” said Novick.

After the shooting, Roberts reportedly fled the state, prompting investigators to intensify their efforts.

Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued, and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies nationwide, Miami Beach Police successfully tracked Roberts to Texas.

Following his arrest, Roberts was brought back to Miami-Dade County, where he now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm.

He appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Thursday.

Police said there is one more suspect connected to this case, adding they are not finished and this case remains under investigation.

The victim is reported to be in stable condition.

Miami Police officer charged with drug-related extortion and attempted cocaine possession https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/miami-police-officer-charged-with-drug-related-extortion-and-attempted-cocaine-possession/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 21:22:30 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382681 A City of Miami police officer faces federal charges for allegedly exploiting his position to stage traffic stops, seizing cash and fake cocaine, and splitting the proceeds with an accomplice.

Federal charges were filed Friday against 40-year-old Frenel Cenat of Boynton Beach. According to the criminal complaint, Cenat collaborated with an individual he believed to be involved in drug trafficking.

Cenat reportedly agreed to use his MPD-issued unmarked vehicle and police position to stop a vehicle driven by an undercover agent posing as a drug trafficker. Cenat believed the driver was carrying a substantial amount of drug money.

On November 3, he identified himself as “Officer Martez of the Miami PD Narcotics Unit.” Cenat gave the driver an ultimatum: surrender a backpack with $52,000 in $100 bills or face arrest. Taking the money, he let the driver go and later split the proceeds with the informant, keeping $39,000.

In another orchestrated traffic stop on Thursday in Deerfield Beach, Cenat identified himself as “Officer Martez of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office – Narcotics Unit.” He pretended to investigate the driver, who was an undercover agent carrying 7 kilograms of fake cocaine and $80,000.

Cenat seized the duffle bag, allowed the driver to leave, and was arrested upon arriving at a pre-arranged location to split the money. Authorities found 7 kilogram-shaped packages and a significant amount of $100 bills in his official MPD vehicle.

Former Opa-Locka Police officer arrested for grand theft and credit card fraud https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/former-opa-locka-police-officer-arrested-for-grand-theft-and-credit-card-fraud/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 21:19:20 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382190 Authorities arrested Keondra Renee Weekes, a former Opa-Locka Police officer, on charges of third-degree grand theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Weekes, who was terminated from the Opa-Locka Police Department in July 2022, surrendered her assigned equipment but neglected to return the department-issued credit card.

FDLE initiated an investigation at the request of Opa-Locka Police after uncovering unauthorized transactions on the credit card account.

Over a span of five months, officials said, Weekes engaged in over 100 transactions at various gas stations, accumulating a total over $8,000.

“Weekes took advantage of a privilege that was revoked from her when she was terminated,” said FDLE Miami Special Agent in Charge Felipe Williams. “Law enforcement officers take an oath, and although Weekes no longer works for the department, FDLE still takes the violation seriously and will ensure justice is served.”

Assisting in the arrest, the Lauderhill Police Department transported Weekes to the Broward County Jail, where she is currently held without bond.

Mother arrested after admitting to planning and killing of 8-year-old son, police say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/mother-arrested-after-admitting-to-planning-and-killing-of-8-year-old-son-police-say/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 17:43:51 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1382081 A woman has been arrested after confessing to meticulously planning and executing the strangulation of her 8-year-old son, according to police.

Officials said 36-year-old Shaneka Ann Mckinzie transported her unconscious son to Hialeah Hospital on Tuesday evening, where he was pronounced dead.

“The murder of a child by their mother, by a parent, that just exceeds imagination in many points,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin.

Mckinzie appeared in court Thursday afternoon.

“I believe in the arrest affidavit there is probable cause for the charge of first-degree murder,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer.

“Ms. Mckinzie confessed,” said Martin.

Detectives said the suspect confessed that for two days, she plotted to kill her child.

“She decided to carry out this plan while young Jason was asleep in the rear seat of her vehicle,” said Martin. “Once he was asleep, she decided that this would be the most opportune time to murder her son, utilizing a tablecloth to both strangle and suffocate him.”

Shortly after her son became unresponsive, Mckinzie drove around the county running errands with her lifeless child’s body in the vehicle, police reported.

“She killed her child,” said Glazer.

Mckinzie remains locked up without bond.

“Our detectives are still investigating and trying to determine a possible motive, that’s something we all ask ourselves in a crime this heinous,” said Martin. “As a parent, as an investigator, this is the last case that anyone wants to hear of. The murder of a child in any situation is a tragic thing to deal with.”

An autopsy revealed asphyxiation as the cause of death, according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office.

Despite holding Friday floor tickets, the show moved to Sunday, which was the same day they were supposed to fly out.

“We were getting ready, listening to Taylor Swift together in our hotel room, and we go downstairs, we order a taxi, and just as we were about to get into the car, we see that she posted that she had to reschedule due to weather,” said Gimenez.

“Outside, it was just hurricanes, tsunami. It was impossible to do a show like that,” said Carballo, “so it was just like, ‘Wow, our luck.'”

Sharing their disappointment with an American Airlines captain, the two friends, who are both from Argentina, received an unexpected surprise.

The captain, empathetic to their missed opportunity, learned to play a Taylor Swift song on the piano, and two days later, he invited Carballo and Jimenez to join him in the hotel lobby.

“We were all in uniform, all ready to go to the airport, and that’s when he tells us to go to the piano, and he had prepared one of Taylor Swift’s most famous songs,” said Carballo.

The sour news turned into a sweet surprise, as the friends sang along with the captain in the hotel lobby right before their flight out of Argentina. They captured the heartfelt moment on video they later posted on social media.

Gimenez and Carballo expressed immense gratitude for the captain’s thoughtful gesture, turning a missed concert into a cherished memory.

“He also showed us his notes, that he actually went into his room, learned the song. We were blown away by it,” said Carballo.

“Amazing pianist, he’s incredible,” said Gimenez. “He was like, ‘Oh, you know, I’m not that good.’ He’s so humble, and he’s such an angel, and for thinking about us in that moment and doing that for us, it just made us feel really special, and it was awesome.”

The flight attendants said they received refunds for their Taylor Swift concert tickets, and they hope to see the pop star live on stage soon.

Camera catches porch pirate stealing, fumbling with patio furniture from SW Miami-Dade home https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/camera-catches-porch-pirate-stealing-fumbling-with-patio-furniture-from-sw-miami-dade-home/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 03:55:26 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381226 A thief was caught on a home’s surveillance camera stealing several items from a residence in South Florida, at times struggling while trying to load patio furniture into his car.

Last Thursday, Arazay Rodriguez returned to her Southwest Miami-Dade home after dropping her children off at school only to discover her porch was without its usual furniture.

Initially, she suspected her husband might be playing a prank, but after reviewing the surveillance video, it became clear that a serious theft had occurred.

“I realized it wasn’t a joke because a black car parked in front and a man gets off with his face covered,” Rodriguez explained in Spanish.

The thief showed up in a black SUV, targeting a loveseat on the porch. In a comical yet failed attempt, he spent about a minute struggling to maneuver and force the furniture into the back of the SUV.

During the process, a pillow fell to the ground. Not happy with just the loveseat, the thief went on to snatch a Valentine’s Day gift from Rodriguez’s husband and squeeze a plant into the already crowded vehicle.

A resident in the area, near Southwest 111th Avenue and 162nd Terrace, told 7News that the neighborhood is typically quiet, but in light of the incident, precautions will be taken.

“My wife’s mother comes over often. Now, if she comes over at night, she waits in her car outside and calls so that someone will walk with her,” said Marion Perez, Rodriguez’s husband.

Despite the incident, Rodriguez said that she was thankful the burglar struck when she wasn’t at home.

“What if I had returned home after dropping them off at school like I always do?” she pondered. “I would have run into him.”

If you have any information on this theft or the subject’s whereabouts, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Investigation underway following officer-involved shooting in Miami https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/investigation-underway-following-officer-involved-shooting-in-miami/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 21:14:39 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1381104 Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Miami.

According to officials, the shooting occurred in the area of Southwest 16th Avenue and 19th Street, Tuesday afternoon.

7News cameras captured a large police presence at the scene.

According to Miami Police, they arrived at a home on 19th Street as a backup for fire rescue. They said the call that was received could have been a medical call.

“One may overdose,” said a dispatcher over Broadcastify police scanner. “Has he overdosed already? Or are they just threatening?”

When they began to render aid to the person, the subject became uncooperative and armed himself with a weapon, which is when, police said, they fire shots.

The subject person was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s trauma center in stable condition.

“I can also confirm that the individual that were shot is in stable condition at the moment,” said Miami Police Officer Freddie Cruz.

Off camera, the mother of the subject, said that her 17-year-old son was the one who was shot. She said that a bullet went through him and that he was out of surgery.

The subjects mother also said she was not allowed to see her son and that she was not the one who called police. Due to the ongoing investigation, she doesn’t know where she will spend the night.

Jose Lazcano, a neighbor, was putting up Christmas lights when the shots rang out. He didn’t hear them, but a neighbor told him about the shooting.

“He saw someone yelling and he heard a couple of shots,” Lazcano said.

There were shots that Lazcano has never heard in the neighborhood that’s he’s lived in for over 20 years.

“No, not like this, no, no, never, never, never, never, nothing involving guns or nothing like that,”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will continue to investigate, which is typical whenever there is an officer-involved shooting.

Arrest made after woman allegedly causes $10,000 damage to Miami church https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/arrest-made-after-woman-allegedly-causes-10000-damage-to-miami-church/ Tue, 14 Nov 2023 00:17:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380587 A woman was arrested after, police said, she was seen throwing bricks at a church causing thousands of dollars in damage.

The incident happened Sunday evening at the Martin Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Center located at 14741 Lincoln Blvd.

According to the arrest report, upon arriving at the scene, Miami Police officers spotted a woman matching a description they were given walking away from the church and detained her as part of their investigation.

One witness, according to police, told officers that he saw the woman picking up bricks and hurling them at various windows of the church, resulting in approximately $10,000 in damages. Two women apparently got into a fight out front.

“Two young ladies who were having an altercation and they really decided to take out all of their anger on the church,” said Rev. Dr. Anthony Reed.

Cellphone video showed the mess that the vandals left behind and daylight revealed the damage to the church.

“They damaged the windows, they took huge bricks and threw it at the windows,” Reed said. “These are stained glass windows that were part of the original church.”

Windows were knocked loose and pushed from the frame, and not long after, police were called and one woman was arrested just down the road.

“It hurts, it hurts,” continued Reed. “… It’s devastating to know that in this day and time, that people would vandalize the church.”

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Marie Falconer, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief at a place of worship.

On Monday, she appeared in court.

“Ms. Falconer, you are to stay away from the Martin Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Center, do you understand that?” a judge said.

The church family will now have to start from scratch when it comes to decorating for the big event of the season. But despite the setback, Rev. Reed said this year’s annual Winter Wonderland Festival will go on as planned.

“We’re just going to stay hopeful,” he said. “We’re not going to let this one bad situation ruin our spirit to bring joy to families in the community.”

Reed said if anyone would like to help restore the Winter Wonderland, they can contribute via Cashapp. The handle is $purplechurch and under the memo line, write “winter joy.”

Increased security measures at Dolphin Mall for holiday shopping season https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/increased-security-measures-at-dolphin-mall-for-holiday-shopping-season/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 22:08:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1380628 As the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, Sweetwater Police are intensifying security measures at the Dolphin Mall.

The focus is on ensuring a safe shopping environment amid the hustle and bustle.

“This time of year brings, not only joy and celebration, but also increased demand for security and safety,” said Sweetwater Police Chief Sergio Diez.

While most people are worried about getting the best deals or what to buy for someone special, Sweetwater Police are ramping up patrols at Dolphin Mall.

Officers, both in uniform and plain clothes, will be patrolling on foot, bicycles, motorcycles, and even utilizing the department’s K-9 units.

“Our presence will be highlighted during the holiday season to provide a visible deterrent and a quick response to any potential threats at the Dolphin Mall,” Diez said.

The comprehensive approach aims to deter criminal activity and enhance public safety throughout the busy shopping center.

In addition to traditional patrols, the police department is deploying cutting-edge technology, including drones and license plate readers. These tools enhance the efficiency of law enforcement efforts, providing an extra layer of surveillance and security during this festive season.

Although the increase police presence at the mall is a deterrent, police said shoppers avoid a few things.

“Whatever stuff that you buy inside a store, keep it with you,” Diez said. “Don’t come outside, leave it in your car and then walk in again. That is the number one problem that we have. Also, lock your cars. People actually leave their cars open and it makes it that much easier. What I really want to say here today is if you see something, say something. If you see a crime in progress, call 911.”

Man arrested for sucker punching cigar vendor on Ocean Drive, officials say https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/man-arrested-for-sucker-punching-cigar-vendor-on-ocean-drive-officials-say/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 15:39:06 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1379063 Police have arrested a man who, they said, punched a cigar vendor on Ocean Drive.

Miami Beach Police arrested Hubert Diaz on Tuesday evening in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, in connection to last month’s sneak attack.

The 41-year-old appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Lody Jean on Wednesday afternoon. He faces charges of aggravated battery and felony battery in connection with the assault.

“This case is extremely violent,” said a prosecutor during the hearing.

https://twitter.com/fox_sheldon/status/1722245716993774011?s=20

The assault occurred on Oct. 6 along the 900 block of Ocean Drive.

The victim, 58-year-old Moraima Lima, is a cigar vendor with over 20 years of experience. Shortly after the attack, Lima spoke to 7News.

She said she suffered injuries to her head, face, ribs and arms when Diaz punched her in the face, and she lay on the the ground for about 20 minutes before she was taken to the hospital.

“When he punched me, I believe that he tried to kill me,” she said. “He has to pay for his crimes because he [could’ve] kill me.”

Lima said Diaz attacked her because she refused to give him free cigarettes. She said the suspect followed and badgered her, then became more aggressive when she wouldn’t give him any cigarettes.

Weeks later, 7News reported that Miami Beach Police were after Diaz, who had been arrested for similar offenses on Ocean Drive earlier in 2023 and in past years.

Video obtained exclusively by 7News showed Diaz being arrested after police said he “threatened to kill one of the waitresses.”

“The defendant has been arrested numerous times since 2016, and it appears that almost all of his arrests are from the city of Miami Beach,” said a prosecutor during the hearing.

“Are you working?” Jean asked Diaz.

“Right now, I’m not working now,” said Diaz.

Wednesday night, a spokesperson for Miami Beach issued a statement that reads, “Through meticulous investigatory methods, our detectives successfully identified, located, and subsequently apprehended Mr. Diaz for his involvement in this case.”

Lima said she feels safe because Miami Beach Police officers arrested the man wanted for the crime.

Diaz is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade on a $50,000 bond.

Authorities arrived at the scene at the Alture Westland complex, located at 1950 W. 49th St.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene as officers surrounded the area.

According to officials, the subject was home alone. Hialeah’s SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team were at the scene in an effort to make contact with the individual.

Officers kept a spotlight on the apartment of the building as the subject walked up to the sliding glass door and wrote something on it. He then stepped out onto the balcony a few times throughout the evening but then walked back inside without saying a word.

Later on through the night, police placed an inflatable fixture on the ground and the subject jumped from a balcony on the fourth floor of the complex. He was assisted by officers and appeared OK.

Dog rescued from dumpster behind Tamarac restaurant https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/dog-rescued-from-dumpster-behind-tamarac-restaurant/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 22:11:15 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1378435 A small dog was rescued from a dumpster behind a Tamarac restaurant, leading a local animal rescue organization to step in and take action.

The dog was found behind a La Granja restaurant at 5701 N University Drive, Monday.

Hernando Delgado rescued the dog from the dumpster.

“When I went and noticed, there’s a lot of garbage right here, and I see the dog there, so I try and grab it,” Delgado said. “The dog was so scared there. It’s shaking.”

Employees at La Granja restaurant said a truck pulled up to the dumpster at around 1:32 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Ana Fernandez, who works at the restaurant, said the driver appeared nervous and seemed upset.

After the driver left, workers went out to the dumpster and found the 3 or 4-year-old dog.

“They say, ‘It’s kind of suspicious, this guy over here,’ because they put in reverse the truck, right here. This is only for commercial plaza, they aren’t suppose to dump, garbage here, and he had something and he dumped that, ” Delgado said.

Delgado also said that when he got the dog out of the garbage, it ran off but returned to the scene. He put the dog on a leash and called Saving Sage Animal Rescue.

Deputies spoke to several witnesses on Monday at the restaurant.

“Somebody put the dog in the dumpster and there are cameras on the location,” said Gina Vlasek with Saving Sage Animal Rescue. “Police are trying to find who did this and how it happened.”

The team quickly arrived at the scene, retrieved the canine, and promptly arranged for a veterinarian to assess her condition.

“We did check her out, she seemed, other than being terrified, she seems pretty healthy,” Vlasek said. “Her blood work isn’t back yet. She seems good, she ate a little bit, she drank water and now, she’s just decompressing.”

“I don’t know why these people do that,” Delgado said. “This is, something is criminal. It’s not suppose to be like that. This is not right, so that is why I feel good the dog is safe.”

The animal rescue found the dog a foster family.

While the dog is micro-chipped, the rescue said they cannot find its owner that way.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has been notified and will initiate an investigation into the alleged neglect and abandonment of the dog.

If you have any information on this crime, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant’s backpack catches fire on FLL-bound JetBlue flight before takeoff from JFK https://wsvn.com/entertainment/former-american-idol-contestants-backpack-catches-fire-on-fll-bound-jetblue-flight-before-takeoff-from-jfk/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 23:49:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377315 A former “American Idol” contestant is sharing his story following an incident on a JetBlue flight from New York to South Florida where his bag suddenly caught on fire as he waited for takeoff.

Video from an Instagram video posted by singer Jimmy Levy on Wednesday captured the chaotic moments after crew members and passengers on board JetBlue Flight 1401 helped put out the flames.

The caption reads, “My backpack just exploded on my flight, Thank God everyone is ok…”

Speaking with 7News on Thursday, Levy said he was abruptly awakened by intense heat while waiting for his delayed flight to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to take off on Monday.

His backpack, initially stowed beneath the seat in front of him, had become engulfed in flames.

“I close my eyes, I go to sleep, I hear a big explosion,” he said, “and I opened my eyes, and my backpack that was under my seat shoots up in like a ball of fire coming toward my face, and I push it down.”

Seconds later, Levy said, crew members and passengers came running to help prevent the flames from spreading.

“It’s crazy, and then all of a sudden, everyone came and started pouring water, and the first thing, I thought someone was like – it was like an attack. I thought someone was trying to attack me,” said Levy.

On his Instagram post, Levy wrote, “I am convinced that this entire scenario was a spiritual attack from the pits of hell and I rebuke it in then name of Jesus! I rejoice during this time, because I only have a few burns on my hands.”

But it turns out the blaze was likely caused by the portable charger in his bag.

“It was definitely off. I haven’t used it, you know, I didn’t really use it the whole trip, so it was just in my bag, I guess,” said Levy. “I had my hats, my portable charger and my wallet.”

Now, after living through this, Levy had some advice for fellow travelers.

“Be very careful of what you have in your carry-on. It’s the things that you don’t expect, like, something that seems as innocent as a portable charger that I guess is made overseas in places we don’t know about and can go off at any time,” he said. “Just stay prayed up, because God definitely protected me during this time.”

No one was hurt.

JetBlue responded to the incident with a statement saying the flight “was evacuated while at the gate before takeoff due to a customer’s malfunctioning electronic device or battery. Our crew immediately responded and addressed the situation, and there were no requests for medical assistance.”

JetBlue officials said they continue to investigate this incident.

Fort Lauderdale’s Victoria Park hit by surge in home burglaries; 18 reported since August https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/fort-lauderdales-victoria-park-hit-by-surge-in-home-burglaries-18-reported-since-august/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 22:48:59 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377320 An increase in residential break-ins has struck the Victoria Park neighborhood, police said, leaving residents on edge.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the upscale residential area in East Fort Lauderdale, just outside the downtown area, has reported 18 home burglaries since August.

“We are concerned, just because of the significant increase in these types of crimes that we’re seeing over the last three months, as well as the nature of the crime,” said FLPD spokesperson Casey Liening. “These people are not just taking a package off the front porch or mail out of the mailbox; they’re making entry into someone’s home, they’re invading their privacy.”

Surveillance video captured one of the break-ins. The subject, seen wearing a face mask and a hoodie is seen walking around a loving room while holding a flashlight.

In this case and in several others, Liening said, the homeowners were away, and the burglars managed to breach hurricane-resistant glass windows.

“This is concerning to us because in a number of these burglaries, it appears the burglars are making entry inside of the home. In some of the cases, the homeowners have been – they’re not home, or they’re out of town,” she said.

In some cases, detectives said, the Wi-Fi and alarms had been turned off.

Police warn residents to be on the lookout.

“We wanted to get the word out. If anyone knows anything, if anyone’s seen anything, if anyone is a victim of something like this, they need to contact us with that information immediately,” said Liening.

Investigators said the burglar or burglars have gotten away with lots of expensive items.

“The loss has included jewelry, a safe, electronics, in some cases significant losses, $250,000,” said Liening. “We’re just hoping that someone out here knows something, recognizes the man seen on this surveillance video and can call us and can give us some additional information so we can stop this from happening.”

FBI searching for suspects in armored truck robbery in Miami Gardens https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/fbi-searching-for-suspects-in-armored-truck-robbery-in-miami-gardens/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 21:17:29 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377350 An armored truck driver came under the gun while servicing an ATM in Miami Gardens, and now federal authorities are seeking the public’s help in their search for the people responsible for the heist.

The robbery occurred just after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday near 18350 NW 2nd Ave.

According to the FBI, the two armed assailants targeted the armored truck courier as they were servicing an ATM machine at a Bank of America branch.

“Armed with a gun, they are advising it was three males wearing masks,” a dispatcher said in radio transmissions.

The FBI said it’s unclear how much cash the crooks stole.

Surveillance stills released by investigators show two of the suspects, seen wearing masks and wearing distinctive clothing, with their guns drawn.

“They fled on foot, last seen heading eastbound,” a dispatcher said in radio transmissions.

One of the robbers was wearing a camo hoodie with the letters WGM on the hood part, and the other was wearing a Halloween mask and a black and red hoodie with the number 36 on the back.

Authorities believe a third person may also be involved and was not captured by the surveillance video.

There are similarities between this robbery and one that took place at the same bank on July 20. Surveillance images show a duo, also with guns drawn.

Authorities said the subjects in the July robbery took off with a tray of cash.

No gunshots were discharged during Thursday’s incident, and there have been no reported injuries.

Cameras showed the armored truck as law enforcement drove it away from the bank several hours after the robbery.

Anyone with information about this robbery or an FBI investigation is urged to call 754-703-2000 or go to tips.fbi.gov.

Zoo Miami’s Sumatran tiger, ‘Berani,’ in serious condition https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/zoo-miamis-sumatran-tiger-berani-in-serious-condition/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 18:54:36 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377300 Zoo Miami’s adult male Sumatran tiger, “Berani,” is currently in serious condition, with concerns raised by the Animal Science and Animal Health teams due to his recent loss of appetite and lethargy.

According to officials with Zoo Miami, Berani was transported to the zoo’s Animal Hospital after being immobilized Wednesday for a series of exams to determine the cause of his abnormal behavior.

The tests included radiographs, ultrasounds, blood and urine collection, and an endoscopy.

Preliminary findings revealed that Berani is severely anemic and dehydrated. The exams also identified an enlarged spleen and kidney irregularities, possibly indicating renal failure, a common issue in older cats.

At over 15 years of age, Berani is considered an elderly tiger, surpassing the typical lifespan of 10-15 years for tigers in the wild.

Berani is currently receiving extensive IV fluids, antibiotics, vitamins, and pain medication to address potential infections and stimulate his appetite. He is under constant observation to monitor changes in his condition.

A treatment plan will be determined pending the results of additional tests.

According to Zoo Miami, Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with fewer than 500 believed to exist in the wild, primarily in the forested areas of Sumatra, Indonesia. Their main threats include habitat loss due to palm oil plantations and poaching. These tigers are the smallest subspecies, with males weighing up to 300 pounds and females around 200 pounds. Zoo Miami has been successful in reproducing this endangered species and remains one of the few zoos worldwide to do so.

Plantation parents arrested for allegedly abusing daughter over nail expenses https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/plantation-parents-arrested-for-allegedly-abusing-daughter-over-nail-expenses/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 18:42:49 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1377288 A pair of Plantation parents were arrested after, police said, their 13-year-old daughter reported severe physical abuse stemming from a misunderstanding over nail expenses.

7News cameras captured Fania and Edwin Pereira as they bonded out of jail, Thursday night. Visibly emotional, the couple declined to comment on the incident or the charges they are facing.

Investigators said the incident unfolded on Tuesday over the Pereiras’ daughter spending too much money at the nail salon.

Plantation Police officers responded to Imagine Charter School at 8200 Peters Road the next day, where the victim shared the troubling events with a school administrator.

According to the police report, the trouble began when the daughter, whose identity is protected, mistakenly overspent on nail services, leading to an angry exchange of text messages with her mother, Fania Pereira.

In those messages, Fania threatened the child with “5 beltings,” the police report states.

Things took a dark turn when Fania picked up her daughter from a nail salon. The young girl was reluctant to enter the vehicle, fearing her mother’s reaction. In the car, Fania reportedly assaulted her daughter by grabbing her hair and punching her thigh in the front passenger seat.

Upon arriving home in Plantation, the situation escalated further. The report states Fania retrieved a belt from the master bedroom and continued to hit her child.

When the teen attempted to shield herself with a book bag and even resorted to kicking in self-defense, Fania threatened to inform her father, Edwin Pereira, that she had attempted to harm her mother.

The report states that upon returning home, Edwin joined the abuse, using the same belt to strike his daughter for trying to defend herself against her mother.

During the incident, Edwin reportedly threatened the child. The arrest states he warned his daughter that “if she were to call the police, when he is released from prison he is going to hurt [her] worse.”

“That gives me pause, Your Honor,” said Assistant State Attorney Eric Linder during Edwin’s bond hearing. “I think it definitely is an aggravating factor for the court’s consideration.”

The police report details the daughter’s injuries, including marks, bruise, and red impressions consistent with a belt and buckle on her arms.

Officers were able to confirm the abuse and subsequently took both parents into custody. Authorities said neither parent had a prior criminal history.

Fania and Edwin Pereira appeared before a judge on Thursday, They each face one count of child abuse without grave bodily harm and are not allowed any contact with their daughter.

“That includes no text messages,” said the judge during Fania’s bond gearing.

“So there’s going to be a lot of restrictions that are put on you and your son,” said the judge during Edwin’s bond hearing. “The last thing you want to have happen is to overwhelm your son to the point where [the Florida Department of Children and Families] decides that they’re going to put your daughter in foster care.”

The victim has been placed in the custody of her older brother, Adrian Pereira, who is 23 years old. He spoke with 7News on Thursday.

“My parents are good people, they’re better parents, and this is just one big misunderstanding,” he said.

Police said that the girl’s parents admitted to the beating.

According to officials, 24-year-old Mike Kevin Jacques was apprehended Monday following a felony traffic stop.

A 29-year-old female victim reported that at around 5:30 a.m. Monday, as she was taking out her trash, Jacques approached her from behind, grabbed her by the hair, and forcibly pulled her away from her home into a nearby parking lot.

At that location, officials said, Jacques took off her clothes and sexually assaulted her.

The victim was able to fight off Jacques, escape and get help. She then located an off-duty Miami Police Officer at the intersection of North Miami Avenue and 77th Street.

Special Victims Detectives promptly launched an investigation and were able to review nearby surveillance footage which confirmed her account.

Through investigative leads, officials said, detectives were able to locate the suspect driving a white BMW X3. A felony traffic stop was made and he was transported to the Miami Police Headquarters Special Victims Office after the victim positively identified him.

Jacques faces charges of sexual battery, kidnapping, burglary/occupied structure, and battery.

Margate teacher arrested for allegedly roughing up kindergarten student https://wsvn.com/news/local/broward/margate-teacher-arrested-for-allegedly-roughing-up-kindergarten-student/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 16:20:38 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1372085 A Margate elementary school teacher was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting a five-year-old kindergarten student at Margate Elementary School, officials said.

The incident occurred on Oct. 10 and was captured by school surveillance cameras.

According to police, surveillance footage showed the victim seated on the floor with a group of other students before the start of class. The altercation began when the student threw a piece of paper in the direction of another student.

At that point, police said, 53-year-old Khadijah Muhammad, who was not the victim’s teacher but was serving in the capacity of a hall monitor, approached the student in an aggressive manner and physically grabbed him by his left wrist.

Muhammad then lifted the student off the ground by his arms, twisted his arms, and grabbed him by the back of his shirt while forcefully shoving him across the hallway, police said.

During the two-minute altercation, Muhammad tore the jacket off the student’s back and continued to grip the student by his arms, wrists, shirt, and jacket.

Police said towards the end of the video, partially blocked at times, Muhammad grabbed the student around his neck and slammed him to the ground.

According to the police report, at no point did Muhammad ask for help from any other staff member to control the situation.

7News spoke to the parents on Tuesday and they said that they had no idea that this occurred at their children’s school.

“I’m very surprised because my daughter right now is in kindergarten, but that is not her teacher. Thank God. But that is very surprising to hear that it’s from our school — very surprised — and not being notified about it, that’s surprising too,” said Emily Fernandez.

“I definitely don’t agree with that,” said Phil Mazzole. “I have a 5-year-old daughter and if it happened to me, I’d be in there at once and want some answers. That’s not something to play around with. These are little kids and I’m getting tired of this school stuff going down here, I really am. I feel really bad for these students and their parents and these teachers need to be held accountable.”

Nicole Zeeb’s child is also in kindergarten and she was in disbelief after hearing about the altercation.

“Yeah, it’s very shocking. I’m surprised, to be honest,” said Zeeb. “It’s alarming but you know, they handled it well, I’m assuming. They took care of what they needed to. I didn’t even know anything, that’s a little alarming.”

Muhammad was taken into custody the day after the incident and charged with one count of child abuse without great bodily harm. She has since been released on bond.

The Broward County Public School Board released a statement regarding the matter, which reads in part: “The school is working closely with law enforcement regarding the situation and the teacher involved has been reassigned away from students and the school pending the outcome of the case.”

Miami’s own Nick Sanchez revs up for NASCAR Truck Series championship bid https://wsvn.com/sports/miamis-own-nick-sanchez-revs-up-for-nascar-truck-series-championship-bid/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:21:40 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1371794 Nick Sanchez, a 22-year-old Miami native, is making waves both on and off the NASCAR Truck Series track in his debut full season.

“To show that you’re you’re not going to take any crap from anyone and you know, I think you obviously have to earn respect on the track but also off the track,” he said.

Following a recent incident with veteran driver Matt Crafton after a race in Talladega, Sanchez is more determined than ever as he prepares for this Saturday’s 200 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

A victory or a strong top-ten finish at Homestead could secure his spot in the final four vying for the championship in Phoenix.

“I approach the race like I need to win it, like I’m in a must-win situation,” said Sanchez. “I want to sit on the pole, I want to win both stages, lead every lap, and win the race. That’s my expectation,” Sanchez stated.

Sanchez’s connection to Homestead runs deep; he attended races at the Homestead Miami-Speedway track as a child and began his racing career by competing in go-karts at the age of 12.

“I knew what I wanted to do from a very young age. I wanted to be a race car driver,” he said. “I felt like I had what it took. I felt like it always made sense to me.”

As a Cuban American, Sanchez is one of the few Hispanic drivers to compete in NASCAR, and he acknowledges the support he receives from the Hispanic community

“Doesn’t matter where I go in this country, you always have a Hispanic fan that sees the last name Sanchez,” he said.

If Sanchez manages to secure a win in the final race in Phoenix next month, he will become only the second South Florida-born driver to clinch a NASCAR championship, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Miami’s Bobby Allison won the Cup Series title in 1983.

“When people think of Miami, they don’t necessarily categorize it with race cars, racing and, you know, to to be from there, to grow up from Miami, all my families there and to win in something that is totally uncommon for, you know, a Miami native to be in racing and NASCAR is really cool,” said Sanchez.

Looking ahead, Sanchez’s promising performance includes splitting his time between the truck and Xfinity Series next season, with a potential transition to a Cup team in 2025 if success continues to follow him.

Support grows in South Florida for Israel amidst ongoing conflict https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/support-grows-in-south-florida-for-israel-amidst-ongoing-conflict/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 20:32:43 +0000 https://wsvn.com/?p=1369560 South Florida residents gathered at the Holocaust Museum in Miami Beach Monday in a display of solidarity to stand with Israel two days after Hamas launched an attack that caught Israel’s vaunted military and intelligence apparatus completely off guard and led to fierce battles in its streets for the first time in decades.

While the turmoil in Israel may seem distant to many, the emotional impact is deeply felt.

Miami-Dade County’s first Jewish Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, expressed her heartfelt concern, emphasizing the need for peace in the Middle East.

“My heart is just overcome with emotion about this terrible situation,” she said. “Everyone in Israel knows somebody who has died or been kidnapped. It’s a small country and everyone is affected.”

Despite the physical distance, the Israeli conflict has touched the lives of many in Miami.

A police presence has been established outside the Jewish Museum of Florida to ensure the safety of the local Jewish community. Flowers could be seen outside the Holocaust Museum.

Inside the Israeli Consulate, the war’s toll has hit close to home.

Deputy Consul Mike Driquez said two of his friends had been killed, and his family in Israel had been forced to barricade themselves in their home.

“The sentiments the feelings are very, very hard,” he said. “They have been butchered. People that are … that were in their homes, in their beds, children, it’s actually I think that I never saw these kinds of images and videos and atrocities.”

Nevertheless, Driquez remains steadfast in his faith and resilience. He believes in the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.

“We always prevail, and we will prevail. It will take time and it will hurt, but we will prevail,” he said.

Driquez also expressed gratitude for the global support Israel has received and highlighted the willingness of people to join the fight for the country’s future.

For those who wish to show their support, a rally is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Holocaust Museum, both in-person and online.
